Re: Technology Thread.
I'm a fan of having everything easily accessible on an iPod type device. I got one of the early devices. 6gb in a large portable cd sized brick. Can be handy in all sorts of ways. Doesn't need to be credit card sized. But given file sizes and quality improvements storage is important, more than form factor anyway.thebish wrote:I am probably out of step with the rest of the world - but I just have no interest in taking all my music anywhere with me on one device...
I accept it is possible - I just don't buy into the need to do it!

I just tend to carry a selection with me, hence only needing the 16Gb.thebish wrote:I am probably out of step with the rest of the world - but I just have no interest in taking all my music anywhere with me on one device...

I mainly use it when I'm getting the trains down to that there London or Birmingham or elsewhere. Or on flights. Mainly because it's a great way of avoiding having to listen to people waffle on at you.
I can understand that in your job you are probably used to that, and may well enjoy it, so can see why you probably have no need.

Oh, right. I'll disregard all your posts from the last 6 months gushing about how great Apple stuff is thenBWFC_Insane wrote:

It's really bizarre.
Anyhow, I'm off to stand outside Curry's and boo anyone walking out with a Sony TV.

Re: Technology Thread.
Looking into getting a tablet, mainly for watching stuff on trains as I seem to spend plenty of time doing this. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations of various models? I'm a bit of an applephobe so am somewhat biased against the iPad, is there really much difference between that and it's rivals other than the iPad is more expensive and for some unknown reason doesn't have a MicroSD card slot? Why don't they by the way?
Edit: I mean seriously, you can quite easily get mp3 players (even from apple) with greater than 16gb memory, and the iPad is a larger device. Why are they so tight on the memory and don't give you the option to expand it? The increases in prices of models as you increase the memory doesn't seem to be reflective of the cost of the memory either. Seems a con to me!

I have the original Asus Transformer. Has a detachable keyboard with 2nd battery. I like it. Extra battery life and flexibility to use it with the keyboard. Works well with a wireless mouse too.

I really do quite fancy one of these. Though I understand early reviews aren't favourable....Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:I have the original Asus Transformer. Has a detachable keyboard with 2nd battery. Re: Technology Thread.
Hoss junior got a kindle fire HD for crimbo. Cheap, really good specs and the best part is that it just worked right out of the box.
Loads of folk swear by their Google Nexus 7s though too; I think there's only a fag paper between them and the fire HD. It's hard to argue with either when they're that cheap.
Wife's got a Surface RT too; they're amazing but the prices are as daft as Apples are.
None of them have enough storage capacity on them though.

The one I linked isn't released yet its the Surface Pro and has a full Windows 8 installation. It's like a genuine laptop/tablet hybrid.CrazyHorse wrote:Hoss junior got a kindle fire HD for crimbo. Cheap, really good specs and the best part is that it just worked right out of the box.

But as you say the prices are pretty mental. It looks good but the US reviewers have basically said, it's too cumbersome to be a good tablet and too expensive and underpowered to compete in the mobility laptop market.
But we'll see I guess.
I just think it'd be ace for work.
But it's like nearly a grand. So won't be getting it yet.

Re: Technology Thread.
Don't do it. Windows 8 is trying to be a phone, a tablet and a PC/laptop all at once. Most things that try to be all things to all rariely achieve it. I get what they are trying to do with it, but it it isn't anywhere near best in class for any of the categories. If you want a tablet I suggest sticking with Android or the evil oneBWFC_Insane wrote:I really do quite fancy one of these. If you put Windows 8 on a laptop then you truly are insane. I made the mistakeBWFC_Insane wrote:I'm not going to buy it yet.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Don't do it. Windows 8 is basically Windows 7 that was given to a 4 year old to redesign the UI.

Got a lot of good reviews though. So I guess it comes down to personal preference.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:If you put Windows 8 on a laptop then you truly are insane. I do think windows 8 looks pretty good. The phones are ok, but are way behind Android and iOS.

I've only had a really quick dabble with it, and it looks to me like the future in terms of it's touchscreen capabilities and overall design.
Everything is going to be about phone-tablet-laptop-desktop interoperability. So windows 8 as a starting point and once refined could be a very decent OS for that IMO. It probably needs revising somewhat and tweaking. But I think most of the reviews said it's user friendliness for your average user was a big step forwards.

I have Windows 8 and don't mind it
I don't really use the tiles/apps because they are pants compared to apps on the apple store & android market. I have had it around 3 months or so now and not had it crash on me once which is a plus. Runs really smooth and I like the look overall. I do like how you get notifications more than anything

Not everything - I'm having Worthy's mate build me a device with a new operating system that can talk seamlessly to my Atari, Etchasketch, Filofax and 8- track.BWFC_Insane wrote:

It won't work but it's only £17.50.

Re: Technology Thread.
On my laptop it crashes daily. Took me 2 weeks to fix updates. Whenever I try to find something it is buried. If I try to go to the top left corner of screen to use a menu it pops 'apps' that are open in the background out so I can't access said menu. People can call me on skype despite me not running it. As in, no process running for it in task manager, yet they can still call me. Most fecking annoying.ChrisC wrote:I have Windows 8 and don't mind itI don't really use the tiles/apps because they are pants compared to apps on the apple store & android market. The stress is killing me!clapton is god wrote:Having a good run of bad luck. My iMac hard drive ceased working on Sunday, the first hard drive I've lost in, ooh, 26 years of owning and using computers. To be fair to Apple this particular Seagate drive was subject to a recall six months ago and I never had time to get it done. Forced into it now though.
I collected the iMac yesterday evening with new hard drive and basic OSX installed. Somehow though almost 600gb of the new drive was already filled so Time Machine couldn't do it's stuff. Just spent an hour on the phone (at their expense) to tech support who couldn't find any reason an empty drive would be so full and then guided me through a clean install and to the point where Time Machine is now reinstating all my files - I hope! The time scale is currently showing over three hours though and I think I might explode in that time. Off out for a walk.
