Harry Genshaw wrote:At work yesterday I called at an address where we'd been chasing some lass up who has been avoiding us. TV & lights on but no-one would come to the door. I'm just about to drive off when I see a little girl peeping round the curtains. Assuming mum was avoiding us but thinking a small child could be left on her own, I go back to the door. After knocking for a while the door is opened and 3 kids are there.

Eldest one, who I took to be about 11 or 12 says "Sorry, we didnt hear you. My mums not in" I asked who was looking after them and she tells me "My auntie but she's in the bath". Giving it up as a bad job, I left a calling card but was feeling distinctly uncomfortable. I thought it would be over reacting to call Social Services but decided to do a few checks today to be on the safe side.

A neighbour beat me to it. Police were alerted there today and found mums been going out in early hours on the pop and leaving kids in house all day with no food.

I'm peed off that 3 kids have been left like that and peed off that I didn't follow my gut instinct and report it straight away :(
Ahhh Harry, no need to beat yourself up about it, must have only been a few hours longer they were in that state if a neighbour reported it the day after you went. Mind blowing isn't it, that people can do that to their kids. So many people long for children and can't have them and so many that do just don't treat the ones they have right. Life's not fair that way but at least they are now getting the support they need.

Did you ever hear anymore about that old lady btw?

What's all this about snow then? Half my social networking friends are stuck on the roads or taking hours to get home, yet I haven't seen any at all so far this year :conf:

Other than for the roadworks I've no idea what was going on in the middle of Rammy tonight. Gridlock all around. Came home via Bury town centre in the end.

I did. Bless her, she died 3 days later. Her family contacted me to say thanks and told me that rather than trip, she'd actually had a brain haemorrage that caused her to fall.

Not angry yet, because it may have been an accident. This morning, walking the dog, I was suddenly approached by a young all black little dog, hardly more than a pup. No collar and looking very bewildered. Of course the hound of the basket cases (otherwise known as our Alfie) had to give it a good examining. I called it over and it let me stroke its head, no bother then wanted to follow us. I looked around but there was no-one in sight. Weighing up what best to do when a couple of people I know appeared with their own dog (a small heeler). They thought I'd aquired another one and came over. Since they have a car the woman said she'd take it to Darley Street vets in Farnworth. Saw them this afternoon and it's there for seven days, then it's the dog pound for the poor little bugger. I'm desperately hoping it just got out and someone will make enquiries and claim it. If it's been just turned loose because it's a mongrel and the owners don't want it, then shame on them.

According to a mate of mine if you reclaim it from a dog shelter they charge eighty quid. Don't know how true that is but I fear for the poor animal. Can't get it out of my head.

Under the circumstances you did the right thing - just hope for the best.

Difficult. How will the owners know it is at a particular vets? The eighty quid charge is ridiculous - do they want the dogs to be put down? Sad tale.

Poor little dog. I assume they will have scanned it for a chip? Hate hearing stories like this.

Good on you for helping, not many people would. I found one wandering along Chorley New Road once and was the only person who stopped.

Yes, the vets did that but, unfortunately, it isn't chipped. It might turn out okay, sure hope so.

:D for some reason it lists me as the main author! We did a half each IIRC, though how much of what I did was useful as a snot-nosed placement student. Either way, I think i deserve it for sifting through decades' worth of financial accounts 8)

I've just checked - they only have volume 1 of my four volume work. What a rotten library. :D

Re: Lost mutts:

You'll probably find, TANGO, that the eighty quid covers micro-chipping and de-sexing plus a general health check. It does here anyroad.

Fair enough Dujon if the owners actualy do turn up and are willing to pay it. I sure hope so.

That wasn't my point, Dujon. To pass the cost on to the owner (and I presume they only do this micro-chipping etc after the claim) simply encourages owners to abandon the animal and I gather that may be a death sentence.
