It's a clever rouse that. Have breakfast once in work. Means you're shaving 20 minutes of the front end. Eating and smoking will then cut off 15-20 minute periods throughout the day. Meaning you either work shorter hours OR stay longer and make it look like you're working longer hours than every other fecker.

I had a staff member who did exactly that. I used to time them (unofficially, for my own amusement really) but kept it on file, just in case.....
Do you think that they used to log how much of your working day that you spend on here?
He probably has a file on each of us.

Maybe they do something called "thinking" whilst they're having a cig. You might want to try the thinking bit yourself.

Yes and no. It's been a long time since I was in a job where some petty bureaucrat figued the way to effectively manage was to watch by the minute. In fact in the Civil Service about 30 years ago. I told 'em to fook off and sack me if they didn't like it, whilst pointing out the rather large disparity between their target attainment and mine.

It's so petty it's barely believable. Strangely enough most of them were the same folk who wanted smoking banning from offices (which I support).

Just to clarify it was really as a joke. He knew I did it and used to give me the wink when he was going.

I wasn't using it in any disciplinary.

Though I don't think he used the smoking breaks as a chance to think. More like chat up the secretary who also smoked. Not that I blame him for that like.

What's wrong with expecting people at work to .... well, how do I put this .... errrr .... work ???
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Are you allowed to smoke in offices at work in the UK? In Quebec (and many other jurisdictions) it is illegal to smoke indoors in any public area (i.e. you can only smoke in an enclosed space if it is a private house or your car). Nor can you smoke in a football stadium since you are too close to others. To smoke you have to outside and be 9 metres from any door. In the city this tends to put you in the middle of the street thus increasing the dangers of smoking.

Almost the same in the UK. No 9 meters though (at the moment)

I used to smoke a pack a day. For years I smoked indoors in fugs which never bothered me. Now when someone lights up indoors illegally (or legally in the US) my eyes begin to water and, to be honest, it bothers me. I've got used to clean air and appreciate it.

Good for both of you. I have given up to a large extent - I may smoke about 10 a year that people offer. Of course not nearly so many people offer these days (far fewer smokers around and cigarettes are becoming bloody expensive). So I can't claim to have given up entirely.

I'm reasonably ok with the ban apart from a couple of points.

1) The "we don't go out to the pub because of all the smoke" lobby. No, you don't go out to the pub, because you don't go out to pubs. No discernable increase in masses of folks who trotted out this line pre-ban.

2) The rules regarding smoking shelters. It discourages me not one jot, that you want to put me in a cold windy shelter, so how about allowing their construction in a manner that at least keeps me dry. Oh and when you trot out to the beer garden on that one hot Manchester summer's day, save yourself the trouble of sitting nearby coughing. Outside is where I can smoke and I've been there all winter.

Pity the poor buggers in Canada in winter who go outside in minus 30 Celsius. Dedicated they are.
