1) Sammy Lee took over, and apparently all our previous good form had been down to him anyway.
2) Megson arrived and called it all a load of guff, jiggery pokery stuff that did nowt. Apart from get us into Europe.
2) Coyle took over and everything in the past was made of coal, everything in the future was made of gold. And Barcelona-shaped passing triangles.

Perhaps you could flip the "critical faculties" switch back on?

This should be absolutely standard at any professional club. Such a joke this was discarded under Coyle. Confirms to me that Freedman is the guy for us, we'll certainly have a better shot of going up under him rather than the usual merry go round of managers. Hope the plebs give him time if we have a rough patch, its all in place for him to succeed.

It's hard to form an opinion on something we don't see, hear or understand. A new training regime might sound good but is it the right one? Will Freedman push the players too hard? Will they have the right diet? Will the ratios of focus between technique and physical ability be correct? How long will players be given to recover from muscle tiredness, tendon damage etc.? We just don't know and even if we did know, we don't know each player would react to that.

So whilst 'new fangled training regime' sounds good, it's hard to form an opinion on it. The only reflection of it's success is on the pitch, which hasn't been a night and day change yet.

Every time a new manager comes in, they're always going to talk about how they're going to do things better and improve on them. I'll wait to see whether it works before giving praise.

I wonder if Gartside believes in the Sports Science approach. After all we've had one really successful manager with it and since been going backwards without it. How it hasn't been carried on since beggars belief. All appointments should be made with the Sports Science in mind.

WANDERERS will today usher in a new era with the appointment of Mark Leather as their new head of sports development.

As The Bolton News revealed at the weekend, the club are looking to completely revamp their medical and sports science department this summer with the departure of several existing staff.

But it has now been confirmed that Leather – one of the integral members of Sam Allardyce’s backroom during the Premier League era – will be the man to front up the wholesale changes.

I mean I struggle to comprehend why our last two managers decided to abandon something that had been a significant part of our previous success. Especially as the equipment was still there.

I know under Megson the stuff was still used by players but some of it became "voluntary", so next to useless.

Then under Coyle it seems it was completely abandoned.

I just don't get why that would happen when the stuff was sitting idly?

Ah well. Can only be a positive, especially bringing back one of the people responsible for setting it up in the first place. And with a connection to the club......

I can't see why you wouldn't have all the sports science stuff in place, Coyle always talked about how fine the margins were in the premier league so why not do everything possible to get on the right side of those margins?

The appliance of sports science isn't a panacea - Man U have it, yet still have plenty injuries - but it does somewhat irk me that our last two managers elected to ignore it, with almost wilful perversity. You can make a case that the experts' wages add up, but I'd guess their combined salaries would be dwarfed by what we were paying, say, Sean Davis.
