Re: General Chit Chat
Billy and I were in the same class at school. We spent much of the teacher strikes of the mid-80s in the Joiners playing pool and video games. Billy is living in the Torremolinos area these days. My parents owned the corner shop on Abden Street, Radcliffe, in the early 80s. I was often found being an obnoxious kid on the evening shift with my Dad!Il Pirate wrote: Small world AT. I spent a lot of my life in Radcliffe at my gran's on Clyde Rd. Still have family there. And I remember the Joiners. Billy Caldwell, landlord & the lodge of 'the buff's' was upstairs....
Tis a small world indeed

Summat from the gadget shop. The more pointless the betterGooner Girl wrote:I'm stuck. What to get Mr GG for Fathers Day from the kids? He says he doesn't really want anything. He has enough socks and t-shirts to last a life time, he rarely reads anything more edifying then 'retro gamer' magazine. He often asks for DVDs and then never watches them. I'm seriously wondering whether a Chinese takeaway and some beer might be a good present? Not very fathers day-y is it though? You're mostly blokes. Any genius ideas?

That all sounds like gobbledegook to me. Craft beers? IPAs? I know he likes 'proper beer' like the Sussex ones we get at local pubs so can have a look at local offie. Am guessing Sainsburys won't sell it?Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Well, usually beer from a well thought of microbrewery. Some do a set of bottles that cover their range*. Or off-licences can put together a selection of bottles. Or you could theme them: if he likes IPAs for instance you could get a range of IPAs from different breweries. But basically craft beers - I'm sure that there must be some good microbreweries around Sussex, Kent, and if not go exotic and get them from far afield (like Scotland). You wont have to actually travel there- a good offie can supply them.Gooner Girl wrote: What constitutes 'top beer'?
Thornbridge for instance do a Wild Swan, Kipling, Jaipur, Sequoia set.

Or get him a tool. A power drill or an electric lump hammer or a set of screwdrivers. Tools are always good.
That's not a leopard!

surely it's up to the kids... he's not YOUR dad, after all.... send them down the shops with their piggy banks - don't interfere, I say...

Kids aren't allowed out these days like in our day. It's dangerous out there...thebish wrote:Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Summat from the gadget shop. in that case - the obvious thing to do is for Mr GG to wait until they are old enough... job done - none of GG's concern...Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Kids aren't allowed out these days like in our day. She find something she likes and wraps it up for me. When I open it and say, "What the hell have you got me this for?". She pretends to be hurt by my behaviour and then says, "Well if you are going to be that ungrateful, I will have it then".
Books, DVD's, tickets to comedians she likes and I don't.
Happens every time.
Go for the take-away and beer.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Indeed, I have a gf who was recently diagnosed bi-polar and I can relate to some of this. I'd recommened listening to the stephen fry podcast he mentions (It's only the last 10 minutes he talks about his depression), it can really put your own mood when you're feeling shitty into perspective.thebish wrote:for anyone who knows someone or lives with someone who struggles with proper depression, this is well put...

Mr GG's just returned home from the youth group he runs to tell me one of the lads who goes (or used to) who has been battling cancer for 2 and a half years is having treatment withdrawn - he's got about 2 weeks to live, he's 15. Feeling so sad and I barely know the lad. Life sucks at times.

That's so terrible a thing to happen to anybody G.G., but at that age. I'll remember a prayer for the lad. Nothing else I can say will be any use.Gooner Girl wrote:Mr GG's just returned home from the youth group he runs to tell me one of the lads who goes (or used to) who has been battling cancer for 2 and a half years is having treatment withdrawn - he's got about 2 weeks to live, he's 15.
