Higuain is a quality player and will score plenty. It will be some top work from Arsenal behind the scenes if they pull this one off.

ARSENAL have put together a package they hope can convince Wayne Rooney to join them from Manchester United.

Rooney is set to meet new United boss David Moyes to discuss his future as soon as possible after the Scot officially starts work on Monday.

But the Gunners are convinced they have a realistic chance of persuading the England striker to join their revolution.

The Emirates hierarchy feel they need to start joining the big boys when it comes to transfers, especially if they want to persuade boss Arsene Wenger to sign an extension, with his contract ending next summer and Paris St-Germain interested in his services.

It’s understood Wenger and Arsenal would like to see a dream partnership of Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain as a central striker with Rooney playing behind him.

And Higuain’s brother, Nicolas, admitted yesterday an Arsenal deal, cost close to being completed for the 25-year-old.

“I cannot deny that Gonzalo is now close to Arsenal,” he said.

Barcelona, PSG and Monaco have been linked with Rooney, but Arsenal feel they can also sway the 27-year-old with the fact he would be playing with England team-mates Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere.

Rooney would command wages of more than £200,000 a week, but the Gunners seem to be ready to make that huge step.

Whilst its a lovely ideal and it would be nice if football was like that, sadly it isn't anymore and if the club wants success they are going to have to start moving with the times, paying outrageous wages etc to compete with City, United, Chelsea in attracting top players, especially considering we seem to have become more of a selling club over the last few years Things have moved on massively since the Wenger wonder years in the late 90's/early noughties.

I think we have done well considering our limitations financially compared to other clubs. To keep up with the big 4, even if not win anything is no mean feat when our wage bill is lower then City, United's, Chelsea... Arsenal run a tight ship financially and whilst that may well benefit us long term when FFP laws come into play for now it means we are unlikely to win trophies as we are. I think (hope) the powers that be (Wenger, board) are FINALLY starting to realise tha,t this close season, hope so anyway. We have tried and failed to win silverware with things as they are and it seems very much that the premier league can be bought these days. When Chelsea had that cash injection years back they came back into the top 4 and its no coincidence City were an average club until they landed in the mega bucks. I'm still proud that we make the top 4 regularly despite not being the richest club around but sadly winning things is what every fan wants and to do that it would seem we need to abandon our moral high ground and join everyone else in the money game.

Am not saying we are hard up, I am saying that we are careful with our money and the board/Wenger have been reluctant to spend money on PLAYERS wages. We have one manager and a squad of around 24 first team players.

Please note, I am not saying I back Arsenal not paying massive wages, I did, but I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that we really can't compete for trophies without doing so. Most fans are of this opinion too, its been the club who have been blind to see it.
