So it must outstrip Agatha Christie then? No, probably doesnt....bobo the clown wrote:What a load of fckg horseshit.TANGODANCER wrote:This is a quote from a Radio Times article by Amanda Vickery:
"Today, Austen is a cultural industry with global reach. The Austen brand has outstripped the Brontës, Dickens and Hardy - Austen Inc. may even be more lucrative than Shakespeare."
(I tried various, more considered, ways of saying this, but, honestly, this seemed to win hands down).

What about Caroline Herschel (sister to William)? Yes, I'm aware that they were born Germans so don't get in my ear over that minor detail. Not only did she do a lot of spade work organising old Billy's records but she was an accomplished astronomer in her own right.
When it comes to faces on bank notes, I wonder how many can cite the names of those depicted on them without referring to an external source. I cannot with our little collection. Strangely enough the only one I can recall is that of Edith Cowan, a woman!

It should be Marie Coope.
What she did with school meals as Head Cook at Our Lady of the Rosary 1962-68 was staggering. She deserves recognition.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Fracking, I know little about it but Balcombe, a village very near where I live has made the national news because of protesters demonstrating against it there. I'm guessing its not a good thing?

I was looking at the protesters on the Beeb site wondering if you'd be among them! Don't know much about the long term effects (& I suspect many 'experts' don't either) but it certainly appears to be a damaging processGooner Girl wrote:Fracking, I know little about it but Balcombe, a village very near where I live has made the national news because of protesters demonstrating against it there. We cannot, simply cannot, allow the spoils of our industrial might traipse into the Home Counties. That just wouldn't be right. Isn't it why God gave us the North ??Gooner Girl wrote:Fracking, I know little about it but Balcombe, a village very near where I live has made the national news because of protesters demonstrating against it there. Ah, the delights of subsidence! Leigh's Flash for instance: pike fishing, sailing and swimming. Fracking is a hot topic here too. If some company or other tries it under my bit of country I'll be up in arms - literally.

Pumping chemicals into the ground cannot be a good idea. What happens when it seeps into the water table? Politicians bang on about protecting the environment and do exactly the opposite with policies FFS. Where do I sign up Hoboh?

Re: General Chit Chat
My eldest came over to the Island few days ago with his g/friend. Did a little catching up which is always nice, and he was telling me about playing at the North Sea Jazz (Rotterdam)festival the other w/end. As his band were playing (3 nights) they were given vip passes for everywhere & he got to meet Carlos Santana, Sting,& Prince!! Who came from Montroux ( i know I've spelt that wrong!) to play with Santana.
Then last w/end the Newport Jazz fest on the IoW; (this is getting bigger each year); at the end of the festival 'jam' on the sun night in the Crispin Pub; at one point, the musicians jamming held 50 'World Jazz music Awards' between them. Serious jamming..............( And Martin Taylor was feckin' awesome!!)
