Re: Today I'm angry about.....
My understanding LK is that the common causes of myopia (short-sightedness) are most widely believed to be nowt to do with muscles at all, but all to do with the shape of the lens and in some cases cornea.Lord Kangana wrote:I can't.![]()
Something to do with the fact that its not my muscles at the back of my eye that are deteriorating (the most common cause of short-sightedness) but its the lens itself. Apparently the workings of my eye are in good nick. Which means I'd still need specs after about 12 months, as the lens will keep deteriorating. That was according to the optician...bearing in mind LLS's view of them.
There are some studies which suggest myopia can be brought on through too much close reading and the like in childhood that weakens the muscles at the back of the eye for distance work. These are not yet conclusive, but possible.
But in general in an adult even with that second theory the muscles don't deteriorate it is the lens which becomes elongated gradually over time or the cornea becomes misshapen as the person gets older. It is why in general myopia develops rapidly for a few years whilst the patient gets older then settles down.
Of course there can be astigmatism thrown into the mix which is to do with irregular shaped corneas that makes it more complex.
There are now contact lenses that you can wear at night that re-shape the cornea and supposedly can restore normal vision without the need for surgery. Which I think sounds bloody miraculous, but someone at work did it, and it actually worked!

Can you speak up, we can't hear you at the back.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

He'll still be able to tell the difference between an apple and some other fruit though so his cider will remain pure.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Yes, but I was told by veterans that he kept getting his escaping Colditz comrades caught because he insisted on being included in the attempts. Still one must admire him.Lord Kangana wrote:Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men.

Monty, re optometrists: I thought I'd check on the Uni of NSW requirements. It appears that, like your Canadian requirements, it's a five year full time course. There seem to be no options for part time or on-line studies. From that point it's possible to obtain a Masters or PhD, time not defined.
Given that I've had a rather sudden deterioration in one of my eyes I most surely will not be dropping in to my local supermarket to purchase a set of magnifiers.

Castrol "R" was better on the aromatic side, TANGO.
I'm not sure, WtW, whether or not there is some hidden meaning in your comment. There are thousands upon thousands of two-stroke petrol engines around here. Motor bikes, scooters, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, chain saws - the list goes on. Perhaps one can purchase pre-mixed two-stroke fuel, I don't know, but when I used to sell the stuff I had to mix it for the customer and later continued to do so when I purchased my first (and only) two-stroke lawn mower. It was second hand as I couldn't afford a new one. The ones I have used, including my own, were gutless wonders as they had no torque to speak of and had to be 'revved' to high heaven when meeting any form of resistance. My now ancient four-stroke lawn mower will happily chug through long grass that the old two-stroke would not have managed without a few attempts. I suspect that I agree with you that two-stroke engines tend to be smelly, noisy, obnoxious devices.

Today, I'm angry about sweet F. A. A friend of mine lost her husband earlier this year and last month her 22 year old daughter was killed in an RTA. As you might expect, she's just numb with grief. Talk about hammering home just how lucky I am. There, that's put a right big dampener on the day!

Slaughter today includes one rhino, seventy five elephants, two thousand six hundred wild horses, and an unknown number approaching the millions of other creatures.

I'd quite like it if we could be wiped out in our own lifetime, or please god (not that you exist) at least start with the Chinese.

Project managers.
They should go to hell, and then maybe there they can find some form of talent.

It's a good one, and is very very true in many instances. (especially where Project Managers are concerned).Lord Kangana wrote:I think you've just discovered The Peter Principle.
