this is often claimed - but is it true? CAMRA claim that 26 pubs are closing every week because of beer duty... newspapers sometimes claim that a similar number are closing because of the smoking ban - quite possibly different reasons are being claimed for the same pub closures...

newspapers often say "xx pubs have closed since the smoking ban was imposed" - and then suggest a direct causal link. - yet, unless I am very much mistaken - pubs were closing every week at a pretty alarming rate long before the smoking ban...

so - genuine question - has any actual research shown that significant numbers of pubs have closed as a direct consequence of the smoking ban?

The oppression of the smoker. If I could be arsed I could look back through how many times you've posted something pretty much identical, but it'd take a while.

The BMA says there is evidence that the vapor produced by e-cigarettes means that they still carry risks for non (passive) smokers nearby. And for that reason they suggest they should be banned in workplaces. Whether that is covered by law or not I don't know.

It's generally accepted that a combination of the smoking ban, cheap supermarket booze and beer tax have all helped to close pubs. How many? You're as capable of researching that as I am.

and many other factors - I'm not at all sure that it is generally accepted that the smoking ban is directly responsible for closing a significant number of pubs as you claim...

so - IS there any research - cos I can't find anything that isn't simply anecdotal. I may be as capable as researching as you - but as you made the claim, I thought you might have done some research - or seen something that led you to make that claim... (I take it you haven't?)

My guess is that the biggest factor in pub closures over the last couple of decades is simply the change in lifestyle - people don't go to the pub as much as they used to as they are at home watching their huge tellies... as for the impact of the smoking ban - there is just as much anecdotal evidence to suggest that people have started going more since the ban (I am one) as there is that people have stopped going because of the ban...

Go ahead, I think you'll find you're spectacularly wrong though - I smoked for 25 years FFS. What the feck is your beef here? I see you failed to highlight the bit where I wrote 'which is fair enough' - to wit - that's your opinion and I'm not here to counter. The point I was making had nothing to do with yours or anyone elses view on smoking, as I say, we all know what yours are because you air them on here at every opportunity or, like now, when the opportunity barely exists. Smoke all you want, mate. I couldn't give a shit.

Now then, the point I raised, was to do with e-cigs being banned in the workplace and I'm wondering what people's views are on that.

Perhaps you should have a smoke to calm down ;)

 aaaaaand breathe Bruce!

Personally I'd go with banning them until there is some evidence that they're safe.

I've seen an increasing number of smokers with cancer as clients recently and whilst I empathise with them, some of the self pity is hard to deal with professionally. If you smoke, chances are you'll get lung cancer. We've known this for over forty years. If you're not prepared to lose the bet, then don't gamble in the first place. If you place a bet with the odds massively stacked against you, don't be too surprised when you end up with a terminal diagnosis.

That may sound harsh, but then we soft soap smokers in the UK.

I can basically see Brucie's point. It's the workplace, so I'm with them banning them if they want. In the same way they can ban hats if they want. But you'd hope they had a reason.

But BWFCi, you're gonna have to be a bit more specific than 'risks' ffs. Especially if you're trying to impy the BMA have said they should be banned, which they haven't, have they?

on the BMA website it says this:
At the BMA's annual meeting, our members agreed that e-cigarettes should be included in the ban on smoking in public places.
so - kinda - yes (if you are talking about public places).

... & those pesky drive-drive laws. Don't forget those Tango

Do gooders going around preventing all those people who used to claim they drove better after a few pints from a nice evening down the pub. B'stards.

this is probably a breach of netiquette - but - considering the stick Pru has had re. his pink dressing gown, I thought I'd accidentally paste this triumph of sartorial elegance!
