Bolton news put an article up today. I am worried by this. Very worried. I do not understand as a football club what we are trying to do. I really honestly do not.

I will separate the BN stuff from the direct DF quotes.
Bolton News wrote: Freedman’s rebuilding job this summer has been conducted under the continual mantra of FFP regulations, which have been brought in by the Football League this season to prevent clubs spending beyond their means.

That has nott stopped some splashing the cash, and in a week where Blackburn have invested seven figures in winger Ben Marshall and even Bournemouth have beaten Celtic to the punch for £2.2million hitman Tokelo Rantie, such tight purse strings must be difficult to take for the Whites boss.

Trimming off some of the bigger earners – and particularly those who do not fit into his longer term plans – has been easier said than done.

And that has meant cash for new signings has been tight, leaving Freedman down to bare bones after the recent run of injuries.
Dougie Freedman wrote: “It is difficult to answer whether we will make signings because the club have been working in a certain way for a while now,”

“Since I came in I have tried to change the squad around in terms of the age – we’ve let players like Martin Petrov, Kevin Davies, Sam Ricketts go – and tried to get younger players in because I know the demands of the Championship. But that has probably left us a bit short.

“Of course I am looking out for players because I think it showed at Tranmere that the squad is not big enough if we are carrying injuries, which we are doing right now.

“Whether we get them or not, I don’t know.”

what's so hard to understand beyond the idea that we are running the club with limited resources?

To what end though? It has been discussed in the other thread.

I don't understand the strategy. Watch other clubs spend money, improve their squads (even supposedly about to go pop Blackburn) and we just hope for the best?

Football has changed. If you can't compete financially you're hoping almost for a miracle. Or at least some really significant luck.

I could accept not competing financially in the premiership. It was a fact of life.

But now it seems we are struggling to compete in this league. Hard to take.

it's not really difficult to understand - we have limited resources - that's it. the strategy, surely, is to do as well as we can with what we've got and what we can afford. i think you're over-complicating this.

Nothing new here for me. Simply it is the process of changing the finance structure from a long standing Premiership club to a Championship one. I would have thought it takes a good 3 seasons to do that as you'll likely have a range of contract lengths with higher salaries and you wont always get rid of the high earners quick enough. Now there are penalties (unknown) for not having finances in order, which is making it more difficult.

It probably means that there will be a loan or two and some ins and outs if things work out as Dougie wants. In essence not much is going to change squad wise, so Dougie is going to have to squeeze the best out of the squad - presumably what he was brought in to do. I think there is plenty of scope to improve our play with what we have. Whether enough for promotion I don't know. But we're certainly not near the best we can be with the personnel available in my opinion.

Sounds like we are trying to abide by the rules to me. Simple as that.

The pot is empty. We're already spending in wages more than most clubs in the division. We might not like it, but if there is no more money there is no more.

Not sure what to make of this..
@reluctantnicko: @Brandygizmo1980 So many of your players being offered round by agents - with or without permission. One kid-on taker so far. Not good.

In which case I'd say we'd best strap ourselves in for a long period in the footballing wilderness. This season was our last chance to make use of the parachute payments. If we're being outspent by Bournemouth and Blackburn then I for one am worried. I wouldn't be surprised, personally to see Freedman walk out on it either, because my interpretation of what he's saying is not good. He should know exactly what chance we have of signing players. Not be talking up the need for them then saying because of how the club operates, he doesn't know if we can.

I don't understand how Eddie will ever get any of his money back though. And that is what doesn't make any sense to me. If he genuinely hasn't got anymore to invest his prior decisions to allow spending on NGog, Sordell and the like, even Muamba Elmander etc look very odd when he was nearing the end of his resources. Why keep spending in those circumstances? Would be a very poor set of business decisions by him if that genuinely is the case.

I have been saying for a while I was concerned. But it has got to the point now where our manager is effectively publically begging for signings and still we seem to be doing nowt.

If Eddie's pot is genuinely empty we're fecked in the long run.

If his pot isn't empty but he's had enough, then well we're fecked that way too.

Not that I can blame Eddie either way he's put a lot in already.

However, I still maintain that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. And judging by what Dougie was talking about in terms of transfers earlier in the summer nobody can convince me that he "knew the score". I think he was expecting much more.

Hardly a surprise ....and he seems to be rather bitter. I guess Freedman or Garty have royally fckd him off.

Good.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

No matter how much Eddie has put into the club, if he has had enough then he should sell the club to someone who wants to invest. Eddie is a fan and I believe he would do his best to do this if his pot was empty or if he has had enough.

yes - we have had a good number of years in the premiership - and yes those years were a great ride - and yes - we should dream of reaching the top..

BUT - reality check - in the current footballing financial landscape - we are not a natural premiership team who should expect to be there more than not.

call me defeatist, small-minded, unambitious - whatever you like - but I am not going to scream and wet my pants if we have an extended spell in the championship/league 1. At the root of it - I REALLY don't care that much what level we are competing at - as long as we are competing...

what depresses me this season is that it just doesn't look like we are competing - and I still think we are capable of competing at this level with what we have...
