Re: The Politics Thread
Ah, I've got the table football reference. Anyway I accept your view. Now you have to convince these people - http://www.naco.uk.com/docs/presentatio ... otocol.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and these http://www.flaginstitute.org/pdfs/Flyin ... ingdom.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'm not sure how official these bodies are considered but both use the term upside down very early in their flag protocol booklets.

Woo! Do I win something
?
Anyway, I get worked up about it for similar reasons that thebish has talked of hunting down grammatical errors only in those who are 'Grammar Nazis' themselves.
If you're going to be the sort of wanker who takes the conscious effort to write in or complain because a flag isn't displayed correctly, at least take care to get it right!
The thing with the Union Flag Jack whatever is that you either accept that it's going to be 'wrong' from one side, or you stitch two together for every one, which is mental.
I did laugh at the picture of the Canadian flag though! That one is definitely upside down

Win? Oh, my unflagging (so to speak) admiration. But then you always had that.Prufrock wrote:Woo! Do I win something?

Re: The Politics Thread
So, and just so I'm clear on this. When I see our nation's flag and on the side nearest the pole the broader part of the white diagonal is on the underside of the red diagonal, is it upside down or back to front?
May the bridges I burn light your way

Re: The Politics Thread
I ain't conceding nowt...it is upside f*cking down. Slide that pole down and have it on the left and the f*cking flag is wrong. You can call it inverted, back to front, perverted, incorrect, upside down, wank, not right, or any other synonym you like. It's still upside down.Bruce Rioja wrote:So, and just so I'm clear on this. Re: The Politics Thread
You see, most flags that are flown have a piece of Hessian like material on the left (or right if you want to be perverse) into which is threaded the pole (or more technically, the bit of string which is attached to the goddam pole). Turning the flag upside down and threading either the string or the goddam pole results in an UPSIDE DOWN F*CKING FLAG.

Re: The Politics Thread
If you did that, it would, of course, be upside down. It would also be back to front. It's the being back to front which makes it 'wrong'. If you JUST turned it upside down, it would be exactly the same. I can't believe sane people can't see that!
Picture a man. Now picture him up-side down. He is still facing you, or else you have done more than turn him upside down! Take that Union flag, now turn it back to front. It's different.

Christ! I'd do the doh! Thing but my phone won't let me. This is what happens when you loose a Classics student on what is basically a scientific subject...Prufrock wrote:If you did that, it would, of course, be upside down. It would also be back to front. The main thing wrong with your illustration, Pru, is that it is two dimensional... You are just showing the same side. However flags, like people, are three dimensional.
Take a man facing you, turn him upside down and where his feet were previously you'll now see the back of his head. Do the same with a flag and you have the "upside down" flag that has sparked this ridiculous debate

no, no, no, no, no, no!! turning it upside down would render you unable to thread the string or put it on the pole - that's all. turning it back-to-front would allow you to put it on the pole. you are simply confusing back-to-front with upside-down - which is forgiveable in a Canadian - they can't be expected to know any better - but I expect better from you!!

And before you f*cling start, the left edge of the man is defined by being the left edge, it cannot become the right hand. Now do you see where studying Latin has got you?

No you don't! It's you not thinking in 3D! Physically, I can move that man so his feet are in the air, and he is still facing me. I can also move him so that his feet are in the air and he is NOT facing me.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Christ! I'd do the doh! Thing but my phone won't let me. One, the first, involves only changing him so his 'up' side, his head, is 'down', where his feet were. The other, so he is now facing away, involves making his 'up', his head, down, AND his 'back', his back, front!
It's blindingly obvious!

I always suspected that mathematics was closer to classics than science. I'm vindicated.thebish wrote:Lost Leopard Spot wrote:You see, most flags that are flown have a piece of Hessian like material on the left (or right if you want to be perverse) into which is threaded the pole (or more technically, the bit of string which is attached to the goddam pole).
