He has, they're gulls that've hitched a lift on a sea-kayak.

The word was good enough for John Milton, Thomas Gray and Charles Dickens. The word is indeed in common parlance so I am not worried about offending zoologically minded pedants.

All a bit like that Union Jack business (though it took an act of parliament to settle that issue).

I know from relatively recent experience that seagullshit exists. It came out of a seagull's arse. Do they do exist, I can vouch for it.

I'm only guessing but I suspect the point the Bish is trying to get across in his own, inimitable way is that....

I disagree. Seagulls exist because almost all English speakers know what is meant when the word is used. The fact that they might more properly say gull or some sub-species of same if irrelevant. When Spotty, shat upon from a colossal height, used the term we understood exactly what he meant. He did not perhaps identify the offender with great accuracy (understandable in the circumstances) but his meaning was clear. The same is true when Shakespeare, Milton, Dickens et al use the term - we know what they mean. We know what people mean when they speak of a buffalo even though they are incorrect in the usage - and think how silly he might have felt if he had been called Bison Bill Cody.

because you recanted your original testimony and declared that the bird concerned was in fact not a seagull but a "gull of the seabird family Laridae, either a Scunthorpe Herring Gull, or a Fat-arsed Laughing Gull"...

so you might claim that you can vouch for:

gull of the seabird family Laridae shit

or

Scunthorpe Herring Gull shit

or

Fat-arsed Laughing Gull shit

but not seagull shit.

I've read about Unicorns and Centaurs too. If I talk about them people understand what I mean. It still doesn't mean they exist.

many people talk of the "fine tooth-comb" - that mythical beast of the barber shop. there still is no such thing as the fine tooth-comb, though...

and - while we are on the subject - there is no such thing as a seagull.
