Ok, putting aside gulls and gods, can I ask this question: is there such a thing as a hawk?
If the answer is no, then I accept I am guilty in believing things exist that don't really.
If the answer is yes, then I'm one confused big cat.
That's not a leopard!

nahh - it's just sauce for the goose!

anybody who argues for several pages that my kayak specially designed to be used in the surf cannot be called a sea-kayak deserves to be teased when he claims there are non-existent birds in Montreal!

yes - a sparrow hawk is a hawk like a herring gull is a gull and a barn owl is an owl.

Oh my. Revelation has just dawned. I was just a vector in your lethal targeting of Monty... I didn't realise, but I now feel the full weight of patsydom descend upon my febrile brow. What a fool I've been, but also what a perfect foil. And what's more, thinking about it, it was probably God himself that directed that seagull to crap on my bonce this morning just so's you could deliver this erudite counter argument to the Montreal One!

He's saying they're called gulls Dan. They're generally found near the coasts and around the sea, so get described as seagulls. There are some near the tip at Raikes Lane. I don't think they're called Tip gulls, but I might be wrong... :|
In which case Bish had better get himself down to Brighton this season to correct all those Brighton fans that keep shouting Seeeeaaaaaaagullls.
The above post is complete bollox/garbage/nonsense, please point this out to me at any and every occasion possible.

Brighton is "0n-sea"...so effectively it's okay for their gulls to be seagulls Dan. Ours, over Bolton are just scavenger gulls till they fly back to the coast, then they can be seagulls again.

I think there are more gulls - a lot more - living inland than live by the sea....

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea. Nothing to do with anything, but just thought I'd mention it. :D

I wonder what barn owls were called before we invented barns. Same with house mice I suppose. Likewise with house spiders. Why are huntsmen called huntsmen when it's well known that they don't hunt men any more than they are men. Now, pelicans are generally a sea going creature - yes? Should we change their name when they, by some strange method, sense that there's water again in Lake Eyre and fly 1000+ miles to have a bath?

I need your sage advice, thebish, I really do.

Oh, yes: seagulls [sic] have a particular love of cricket grounds. Should we now call them cricket birds?

barn owls evolved at the same time we invented barns... simple!

and - no - we should simply call them whatever kind of gull they actually are! (and if we don't know - "gull" will suffice) - also simple! 8)

Thing is, we've been calling them seagulls since we first had a day trip to the seaside in short pants a lifetime ago. The correctness of things never match the magic of memory. I'm thinking far more folk call them seagulls than just gulls.

Thanks, thebish, you make much sense. From now on I shall think of you as the white collared blackbird.

Shite! I've just heard that in one of my neighbouring "suburbs" 193 homes have been destroyed and 100+ damaged in the local bushfire. One man died whilst trying to protect his home. This fire, which is still doing what fires do, is just one of about a hundred in N.S.W. that are burning as I type.

I'm bloody angry. Please excuse me if I put pedantry on the back burner (sorry!) for the moment.
