Almost 5 months ago, for my birthday, my daughter bought me a £50 voucher for Aumbry restaurant in Prestwich, and, yesterday, three of us went.

It was fab.

To start, located in a modest terraced house it is entirely unpretentious with about 30 covers.

But the food is tremendous.

We were welcomed with little snacks of choux pastry containing hot goats curd, and black pea puree with vinegar and crunchy rice. These came with homemade bread and a choice of two farmhouse butters vegetable oil or beef dripping. I can't remember what the amuse bouche was but it was nice. And the bread is available, without extra charge throughout the meal.

First course was Cornish sardines with lemon and roast garlic, sweet rather than pungent.

Next I had poached hake with mussels, parsley and lapsang souchong sauce - wonderful.

Then came sherry trifle, so light and tasty, better by far than any I'd had before.

Even after this more stunnng little mouthfuls appeared - including a little rhubarb and custard pate and iced lemon juice on a stick.

My wife and daughter had some of the above, but had roast pumpkin soup and pearly barley as well.

I had a Gascon wine that was fab.

Look, this was not cheap, there was £40 to pay on top of the gift voucher and the evening menu is more expensive, but it was just excellent and for a special treat - recommend unreservedly...

I wouldn't want to usurp LK's advice in anyway... but my Moro cookbook has an ace recipe for hake tagine, fish marinated in charmoula (garlic, cumin, paprika, coriander, lemon juice, olive oil) for a couple of hours and then cooked with potatoes, olives, garlic, green peppers, tomatoes in a tagine (or other casserole dish)... Serve with a little salad and some flat bread (naan is fine!)....

Only issue I have is with the wine list. Admittedly they have import costs on the like on top, but that Gascon wine you drank there William is less than 5 euros at source.

Yeah the wine mark up was horrendous but this was a lunch time - so by the glass rather than the bottle...

i'll be v interested in what you make of it... Are you doing the nine course tasting menu? I fancy that.
