it should change its name OR just have actual champions in it..LeverEnd wrote:Yes it was, like some pre-season exhibiton. The European Cup used to be a great competition, can't be doing with Champions League as it is. Group stages are a farce, too many dead rubbers as they call them in tennis. Chelsea lost and went through as well.boltonboris wrote:Was like a friendly that last night. No tackles, no intensity. Fvckin' tripe.
And how bad are Marseille?? Jesus!

League winners from the top 6 or 8 leagues in the world.
Everyone plays each other twice.
Someone wins the league.
It is called the Champions LEAGUE after all and not the Champions Cup.

Bet you'd change your tune if ever Bolton finished in the top 4 of the PL.ChrisC wrote:

It's so unfortunate that finishing 4th in the league has become as important as winning it.
Football's shit really, if mediocrity is rewarded so heavily.

Re: Tonight's Football
I don't think its as important as winning the league, of course its not. But its nice to have an extra possibility of winning something at the start of the season (even if we always crash and burn). European home night matches are always good to go to. You must remember the excitement of your season in Europe?boltonboris wrote:It's so unfortunate that finishing 4th in the league has become as important as winning it.

Re: Tonight's Football
I'm happy enough to admit we would have zero chance like most teams who finish 3rd/4th in their leagues. Europa is fine for me. Might aswell call the Champions League the Champions and the runners up cup.Gooner Girl wrote:Bet you'd change your tune if ever Bolton finished in the top 4 of the PL.ChrisC wrote:

Re: Tonight's Football
Yes, but that was a massive achievement for us. Can constantly finishing 4th by the skin of your teeth in order to play against other 4th placed teams at some point really a massive achievement that football should base it's progress on?Gooner Girl wrote:I don't think its as important as winning the league, of course its not. s'all about cash... if you're the kind of club that spends £30-40million on one player - then that's what you have to do...

But that's the remit for a football manager nowadays.thebish wrote:s'all about cash... if you're the kind of club that spends £30-40million on one player - then that's what you have to do...
"Your aim is to finish........... 4th mwahahaha"
It's shit. don't get me wrong, I'd love to be watching Bolton play at that level, but when finishing almost quarter of the way down the table becomes the sole goal for a clubs board and manager, you have to wonder if it's worth all the hassle and money

Re: Tonight's Football
I'd have the Premier League winners, 2nd place, and the FA and League Cup winners in the Champs League. Make it for teams who've actually won something the year before.

Re: Tonight's Football
At last something near common sense. It seems that winning trophies is no longer important despite being the basis for how successful a manager/player is. You don't look at a manager/player at the end of his career and go "he finished 4th 11 times" do you. A point I would also make is that when your old your not going to remember the seasons you finished 4th your going to remember winning something even if it is just a league cup. Go and ask those Arsenal fans what they would prefer league cups or 4th place finishes.truewhite15 wrote:I'd have the Premier League winners, 2nd place, and the FA and League Cup winners in the Champs League. The above post is complete bollox/garbage/nonsense, please point this out to me at any and every occasion possible.

Re: Tonight's Football
Yeah, should have seen that one coming. My point still stands. If there's 4 places in Europe's premier competition going for English clubs, it seems only fair that the winners, plus the team that came closest in the league, take said places.LeverEnd wrote:Meat and drink for thebish that one truewhite15.thebish wrote:truewhite15 wrote:I'd have the Premier League winners, 2nd place, and the FA and League Cup winners in the Champs League. ^ just don't get him started on whether those who finish 4th are actually in the Champions League or not!

manU and spurs both dropping 2pts - GG will be happy...
yernited are now 9pts adrift of the Arse - with only 3 pts more than we've amassed...
