There is a difference between "he flashed his lights at me" and "he flashed me" in terms of the direct (and indirect) object. If you looked in google for "he flashed me" the first entry would show the double entendre. However, in UK speech to flash someone may well have been quite acceptable, so I just commented on the difference.

in the UK - if you are talking about a driving incident, I think the context makes it perfectly clear (as I imagine it would in Canada - I asked my Canadian Brother-in-Law and he understands it the same way..)

if you type the phrase "he flashed me" and add the word "driving" (to provide the context) into google - the first result is from a motorbike forum describing just what she was describing...

Stop it. You're both spoiling it. A reference to Finbarr was sufficient.

Aye well. That's capitalism and the free market for you. And the defenders of such a system would have you believe of course that those 85 people, proportionately have worked harder than half the population of the world.......

Well, how do you justify that stastistic? Or don't you? Why should 85 people be wealthier than half the world?

Well, it's not because 85 people have worked harder than half the world now, is it? Proportionately or otherwise.

I'm not justifying anything, just pointing out that you're talking tosh, as you usually do when this kind of thing comes up. You show me where anyone's claiming that the world's 85 richest people claim to be working harder than half of the entire world.

Well that is good then. So re-distrubuting a lot of their wealth would be a fair and good thing then?

Who is president of the world and accountable for this sort of thing, though?

And does that figure take account of how much of the wealth of those 85 people is already ploughed back into good causes?

And who's to say that money is everything - are there not many peoples in the world who wouldn't register high up the $ scale but who have a far higher level of community, family values and, frankly, happiness, than many of those in 'rich' countries?

If that's what they choose to do with it, yes. But it's up to them.

Because it's their money to do with as they please.

I take it that you walk the streets of Bolton handing out the twenties to down and outs?! If not - why not? How is that fair?

I'd gladly pay a higher percentage of tax on my earnings above a certain amount. Gladly. In fact I'd campaign to do so.

But the bolded bit suggests you think that a system that leads to 85 people being richer than half the world is a good and fair one. So what is the justification for it, in your eyes?

What are you doing with all this money you don't need? What worthy causes are you giving it to? Because that's just empty rhetoric otherwise.

Just spent the last hour turning the house upside down for mine and Mr GG's Arsenal membership cards. I just know if I order another one I will find it.
