I'm saying its highly improbable. Unless we're entering bish levels of pedantry, then in which case, yes I suspect many subsistence farmers have in their lives experienced some form of momentary happiness.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
If my maths is broadly correct, then someone on an average salary in the UK (27k?) would be working harder that 156 people...40k, working harder than 231 people. What do you think would be a reasonable number of the population that one person could work harder than? Maybe 2 or 3 at a push? That would sorta cap stuff at an XBOX One with 4 games sorta level.BWFC_Insane wrote:Aye well. That's capitalism and the free market for you. And the defenders of such a system would have you believe of course that those 85 people, proportionately have worked harder than half the population of the world.......Gooner Girl wrote:Mr GG shared this on fb the other day. I don't disagree with the broad notion behind the report, but I'm not sure about using how many people's work you do to be a particularly good measure...

Fair enough... I just think there must be lots of people who just manage to feed themselves and their family day to day and are largely content with the situation.Lord Kangana wrote:I'm saying its highly improbable. Which is to say (without resorting to pedantry) I don't think 'subsistence' automatically means 'misery' (when subsistence and not something falling short of that is achieved).

Many of them no doubt are content untill we go stomping in with our Western values and tell them their way of life is total crap, then set about destroying everything they had in return for 'a better life'.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:The point is that there are plenty of people in the world living simple lives and not necessarily desperate for something else that looks like material wealth. Is that a statement worthy of derision?Lord Kangana wrote:I thought everyone was deriding you for the happy subsistence farmers comment to be honest.

Without doubt correct, though as Hobes says exposure to Western life can have them develop aspirations which could dishevel that satisfaction. We do tend to judge people through our own experiences and values.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:Fair enough... I always find a smile when I see an incongruous picture such as a person in a paddy field with a mobile.
No value judgement there, just puts simplistic thinking in its place.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
I went to the Dominican Republic in 1994 for my honeymoon.
We went for a horse trek up near the Haitian border. These people farm bananas. They hire Haitians to pick their crops and pay them in bananas which they then trade for food etc.
Their houses are constructed out of flimsy planks, mud and Palm leaves.
And every other house had a satellite dish.

Today I'm angry about a phone call I had from a friend who organises the chicken rescues I go on. Turns out last weekends rescue (that I missed) the chickens were in the worst state ever seen. They were coming from a slaughterhouse and not a farm, and when our pick up person got there he found they had been put in crates as normal but then stacked on top of each other and left outside in the freezing cold and rain without food and water for 2 days. And of course, all the chickens at the top had pooed and it just fell on the ones underneath so the bottom ones were completely covered in crap. Makes me mad how people can do things like this.

Hoboh. I've not clicked on the link, as I won't give those pricks at the DM my time of day, but you know, if you don't read that paper. Your life will become so much better

Fecking pot holes on the M62 round the Birch services area!!! FFs stuff travels at 70 mph down here (at off peak times
) and there's some real nasty feckers. Would hate to hit one on my bike even at that low speed.

Just that knob who says we would be better off and use less power if our homes were insulated, never says how he would keep his shareholders happy with reduced sales and turnover.

snap... hit a pothole today at about 40mph - small but deep - rattled every bone in my body...Hoboh wrote:Fecking pot holes on the M62 round the Birch services area!!! Today I'm angry at my own stupidity. Had a look at my diary this morning and despite reading it twice, failed to notice that my last meeting today was in Preston, convincing myself it was in Blackpool instead. No idea why, although the confirmatory email came from someone in Blackpool. Cue phone call from my boss asking where I was as I traipsed around the wrong building looking for a meeting that wasnt't there. Fuming at myself.

Sleep deprivation. Can see why they use it as a form of torture. Blooming toddlers with colds.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
children grow up very fast - why waste time sleeping when you could be enjoying every second of their little lives!! one day you'll have no toddlers to wake you up and you will look back wistfully - they will have buggered off to uni or set up home in Swindon... make the most of it while you can - suck all the marrowy joy out of those magical nocturnal moments!!Gooner Girl wrote:Sleep deprivation.
