The fast, right hand lane, is the outside lane. I'm fecking livid that any citizen of this country would think otherwise. It is for overtaking only, and I'm equally fecking livid that it's usually occupied (along with the middle lane) by complete and utter tosspots.

You're both wrong! If you ever talk to a motorway Police officer he (they are very nearly all 'he') will quickly tell you very forcefully that all the lanes are 'fast'. There is no such thing as a slow lane on the strip. They are all bloody fast! Call them lane one, two and three but never fast or slow.

"Overtaking Lane(s)" I thought.

The principle that some cars hog the centre and even the outside lanes remains correct. As is that lorries, limited to 60mph overtaking other lorries at an incremental rate of maybe 1 mph, is the principle cause of 'concertina' bunching of traffic.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Yeah inside is the slow lane. Which confused me as a kid.

Mu father in law has the awful habit of driving onto a quiet Motorway, straight into the central lane and then driving at exactly 70mph. He then refuses to pull over as to his mind he's driving at the speed limit so nobody should be overtaking him (or undertaking, which not surprisingly frequently happens after he's ignored being flashed at for the previous 32 miles) :whack:

To be fair, if he's anything like me, the second anyone flashes, I'm automatically dropping to 60 and going nowhere. Apart from that time when the undercover cops put the blues and twos on. But then I was doing 95, and I thought they were arresting me, not trying to get past.

But apart from that...

I'm glad to find such universal (apart from Beefy) agreement on the inside/outside business. I may show the thread to my wife after all. My passenger seat instructions to her like "Move to the inside lane" have caused some difficulties. I have learned to say left lane and right lane now.

It's not the "slow lane", it's the lane you should be in if you aren't overtaking or preparing to overtake.

... & yes LK, been there. It makes you slow down for almost minutes, doesn't it. Also was once drawn alongside by cops in an unmarked car as I was on the phone. They drove alongside me till I cottoned on and put it down. One wagged his finger at me, I mouthed an apology and they then tear-arsed off presumably to continue their original task. Some you win.

To clarify, by 'inside lane' I did mean the one furthest left. My issue being that there seems to be a lot of people who treat it as a 'slow lane' driving way below the speed limit for seemingly no reason. They aren't as annoying as the middle lane hogs though, or tail-gaiters (who almost exclusively seem to drive either BMWs, Mercs or Audis).

Well I'd have to plead guilty to that at least some of the time. I often do a complete circuit of the M60 in the course of a working day stopping off several times on that drive. I plan my day well and am rarely in any kind of hurry so can generally use lane one at 60mph falling in with heavier vehicles restricted to around that speed without any bother to anyone else. No idea why that would cause any inconvenience to you as you have two other lanes to pass me and 60mph is hardly 'slow' anyway. 40 can cause a problem but 60? The 70 limit is a maximum rather than a minimum you know.

How can anyone tell the difference between Lenny Henry having a moan and him doing his routine? :conf:

Because when he's doing his routine he's bouncing up and down testing a bed in an inn that isn't average (supposedly). Apart from that he's having a moan.

I must have completely misunderstood your post, Beefy, and, as Clappers says, what is wrong with 60 mph in th eloeft lane. Over here our autoroutes have maximum and minimum speeds. The minimum speed is usually 60 kph, well below 60 mph.
