He said I hadn't changed a bit. Anyway, I always think it's quite nice to be remembered by ex pupils ten years on even if the fact he must be approaching late twenties now makes me feel very old.

Went for a pint in the Lion of Vienna after my race tonight and the barmaid said she recognised me and did I used to work in The Works, a discount bookshop in The Arndale. After I said no she said I had a double, by which time she was looking familiar. I said that this normally happens with ex pupils at which point she twigged and then rabbited on about school (circa 2006)for a few minutes before wandering through to the other bar without serving me!

My missus started teaching in a primary school in Hendon in 1974. In September of last year she discovered that one of the children in her school (in Derbyshire) is the granddaughter of one of her pupils from the very first class she taught. It's a very small world.

^ If only it was that simple. I'm tied to a company who are tied to a company, and rates for the job are set. it's piece-work really. Lots of it, for which I am grateful, but all at a set price.

Time for a re-negotiation, Clappers - unless you're tied to a fixed term contract. At one stage I was doing electronic repairs (warranty and private) for the local agent of a Hong Kong company. In this case there was no formal contract, just a handshake arrangement. Initially I was the NSW service centre but little by little all the other centres dropped out so that eventually I was servicing all of Australia. That was welcome as it increased volume. The problem was that I was inundated with calls for help. Most of those interruptions were easily dealt with (some people are just plain stupid) but took up a considerable amount of my working hours. So I made a deal with Hong Kong: They'd pay for the business 'phone line plus a fixed weekly amount in compensation for my time. Naturally they also paid for all transport and repair costs.

I'm not suggesting that it will be as easy as that in your case but if you don't try you'll never know.

It's a zero hours contract, Dujon, all the rage in the UK at the moment. In short they don't guarantee me any work, but send loads. And yes, you are right, of course. It is time I had a quiet word with the fieldforce manager, perhaps even a noisy one.

Stayed in Cavtat 2 yrs ago, astonishingly beautiful and a short drive or sail to Dubrovnik which was like being in a Disney film. Love it.

Off to Rovinj, further north in a month's time.

It's great walking round the old town walls, if there's any left after the civil war.

We used to go "island hopping" up to places like Hvar and Korcula, from Dubrovnik.

Wonderful stuff - enjoy.
