I think you've spectacularly missed mine.

No, I think not, unless it means that legally owned guns are the ones that commit the gun crimes rather than those in the hands of people who would kill with a knife, club or any other means. If your meaning is different then yes, I'm missing it. Since we're talking about America there won't be much sense attached to any of it anyway.

there are widely quoted stats for the mass shootings:

"Since 1982, there have been at least 61 mass murders carried out with firearms across the country, with the killings unfolding in 30 states from Massachusetts to Hawaii," they found. And in most cases, the killers had obtained their weapons legally:

pinning down stats on total gun-related deaths across the U.S. seems fraught with claim and counter-claim and debates over what constitutes a legal.illegal firearm...

presumably, those who argue that the level of gun-related deaths is nothing to do with the supply of readily available guns would have to argue that there are on average (or mean/median!) there are just a lot more bad Americans than other nationalities...

Well, with a large dose of "just don't know" there's also the mental state of mass killers to consider. If they hadn't owned guns would they have tried to acquire them if they intended causing such mayhem? Surely no same person would be involved in that? It has to be a very deranged person who kills mindlessly.

Guns are bad, bombs are bad but they exist so everyone has to have them :hang:

The simple truth that escapes the average gun toting American is that more guns means more access to guns, legal or not. More access means more shootings and deaths. Think about it. In the UK a bloke bumps into another in a pub and spills his drink. Sometimes it might result in a fight, much more rarely a stabbing and extremely rarely the bloke might have a gun. In some states, like Georgia now, there is a good possibility the bloke is carrying a legal firearm. He loses his temper, does he punch or use the gun? He's a bit pissed, how much more likely is he to use the gun? Now add in the whole I'm entitled to protect myself with guns attitude that is prevalent over there.

It doesn't matter how or who has the gun, the fact they are so accessible is a major factor as to why there are so many people dying from guns in the US. The state of society there is another major factor, but take the guns away and the number of deaths reduces dramatically.

↑↑↑ Whilst driving with an American colleague once I remarked about how relatively relaxed he was about minor bits of poor driving. Over here road-rage of one extent or another would have occurred.

"Ah, but over there the worst that will happen is flashed lights, horns blaring and a shake of the fist. Our here he may have a semi automatic under his seat".

Lesson, carry a gun and you can pull out of junctions however you wish.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
"I understand you are a very good footballer" ... "I try".

The states with 'stand your ground' laws have led to some odd precedents being set in when you can shoot someone and have it deemed as being in self defence. You can be sure there'll be some racial bias involved too. There was a bit I saw on Jon Stewart recently talking about how the media (particularly the right wing media) seems to have become desensitized to the mass shootings and arguing that they are now just 'one of those things' that nothing can be done about, despite it being a uniquely American problem.

A few years ago my then energy supplier sent me a box of them. I tried one before returning the remainder with a note I put in the box which read 'Kindly don't darken my house again'. :)

I like that notion. :-)

The only problem I appear to be finding, is increasing difficulty, given all the different types of fitting we have, finding "normal" lightbulbs...everywhere's just decked out in stuff that 20W.

Wankers.

Like it! Almost as good as that guy sending bricks back to junk-mailers in their 'free reply' envelopes.

I'm not sure what the light-bulb in my room is, it's one of those twisty ones that look like a long tube folded about, but it doesn't take time to 'warm up', and it's lasted the 15 months since I've been there.

I suppose it could just be the onset of old bastardness for me. I'm at the stage where I have to hold stuff with small text up next to the window to have any hope of reading it :(
