formal work thing. Men in suits, discussing a topic only they understand.

On the same team, or is it a dispute resolution thing?

Don't let them stray from the subject matter and watch out for the big mouth. There is always at least one who wants to control the discussion and constantly interrupts everyone else to get their own views across. Get them (or him) into line early by stopping them talking over other people. One person to speak at once or else it becomes chaos. Everyone will have their own view and should be heard.
Look out for the quiet one who doesn't say much. They might be the deep thinker who goes through the options before opening their mouth. Don't be worried about asking for his opinion if you think they have something to contribute.

Agreed, Malc. I'd add that it would be wise to state to the gathering, before the curtain goes up, what the ground rules are. You are the moderator so your rules define the conduct of the meeting. Stick to them.

It may help to have an outline agenda and, quite early on, state what the expectations are for the meeting and ask everyone round the table what theirs are too.

Depending on how the organization is structured (if they're not all peers and "rank" plays a part) - might want to point out rank gets left at the door - Don't want the Extra Senior Vice President of Doing Buggerall, to control the debate, if the people likely to have the answers are Private (Third Class) of Technical Engineering.
I'd go one step further than GtE and not just state the objectives, but write them on a flip (or whiteboard) etc. and if the debate is going off track, keep coming back to the objectives ("great debate, but which one of these x objectives is it addressing")
Assuming you've got the invite list correct, if someone not contributing, look for a way to bring them into the debate - they're there for a reason (or should be) - often happens that Professional Meeting Attendees just making up the numbers...try and identify these too and look to ascertain what they/their function/their team is going to bring to the answer...If it's nowt, don't be afraid of cutting them a little short (they might still contribute useful stuff, by dint of the fact that they attend meetings all day) in favour of a function/team that is a main part of the answer...
Edit: Oh and depending how long the session is, tell them to switch off 'phones, laptops, tablets etc. and when the breaks are so they can do their day job. The business rarely goes bankrupt because some folks are locked away for a day (there are potentially the odd exceptions)

my next project on the sea-kayak is to do some fishing - make the best of the time I am out there - just to catch a few fresh mackerel... I have never been fishing before in my life - so have been doing a bit of research... how hard can it be??
anyway - today I came across this staggering spellathon!
anyway - today I came across this staggering spellathon!
I fish most of the time on trips, the best line iv found , which is yoused by a lot of us down hear is about 15m of vanetian blind cord, then a good big swivel, and then about two to three metrs of mono fishing line , get a McDonalds drinking strore , cut it in half and thread both pices on the line , then the hook , the hole rig is then wound around a scrap of closed sell foam . The cord is easy on your hands when you drag your catch in , and dosent tangel as easily as just yousing fishing line .

I'm thinking what sort of size fish, you could potentially hook on venetian blind cord, and the overall stability of a canoe. I think it's worth a try.thebish wrote:my next project on the sea-kayak is to do some fishing - make the best of the time I am out there - just to catch a few fresh mackerel... The new business is part set up now. I'm aiming to pitch for corporate work and am wondering whether it would be advantageous to have, horror of horrors, a London address (Obviously just a mailing address) for the business as opposed to being based oop North. Thoughts??

Most people are receptive to North West addresses (Scoursers excluded), yet if your core focus will be Southern based, then London would be better
