Lots on the news today about "equality" in prize money for men and women in sport. I'm a big advocate of girlies getting the same pay as men for the same job, but. (You knew there was going to be a "but"), I just don't get it, in how they're trying to relate it to sport.
BBC wrote:The biggest disparities in prize money were found in football, cricket, golf, darts, snooker and squash
Some of those, it isn't going to take a rocket scientist to work out - football, cricket and golf are largely going to be based on viewing figures/TV revenue etc. I'm sure if the girlies were attracting the same TV revenue, then there'd be a great case, there'd be more money in it for them to award themselves a pay rise. Darts and Snooker, the main competitions are open to women and men - so I don't believe that should be included as a "difference". They get the same amount in tennis, despite playing up to 2 sets less per match.

It's rather like me setting up a fat-bastards, over 50's football team, and expecting to get paid as much as your average United player, because "the job is the same".

Clearly it isn't. And even if it was, I suspect the TV rights would be somewhat smaller.

aye - ditto..

and even though prize money is the same in tennis now - it's NOT the same job - the girlies only play best of 3 sets - so they are doing a whole load less work for their cash....

I read this with the same view. The way the BBC, shorn of so much 'proper sport' and enhanced by a clear edict to force-feed us viewing which people don't want, pushes girlie football at the moment is horrible. Even at the FA Cup draw last night there they were .... a ladies football team. Every sports programme seems to have to shoehorn in a female equivalent.

If there is demand the money will follow. I have an alternative. For all sports ... all of them ... de-segregate. Open to both sexes & get on with it. THAT would be proper equality.

BBC website can feck off. Constantly throwing in articles about women's football without any clue in the title so you're wondering what this Arsenal-Chelsea game you've missed is, and then it's a women's game.

"Mens' sports" should be open. If women are good enough they should be allowed to compete with men. When Perugia wanted to sign Hannah Ljunberg a few years back they should have been allowed to. If they're good enough, why not? There should then also be allowed to be women-only leagues if they want them (and men-too if they wanted, though I can't see why), but with the obvious lack of outside interest that will come with that, and they can stop trying to push it so much.

Spot on Pru. The BBC are now getting so PC it's ridiculous. Just how many divisions do they read the scores from on Sports Report these days?? Does anyone really give a stuff about the Ryman League or what's happened in obscure backwater leagues in Scotland?!

The 'problem' with the tennis comparison is that both men and women play in the same tournament, which doesn't happen too often in most sports. People who pay to gain entry into to Wimbledon, for instance, can and do watch both women and men play. With other sports (football and golf), they would not encounter both at the same time. Women say that their rallies last much longer than men's which is why they should have shorter matches. In my opinion, women's tennis also have more one sided games than the men's even later in the tournament.

As Pru said, sports tournaments should be open for both men and women (like darts and snooker) to compete against each other if they want equality in pay. Contact sports like football and rugby would be a little tricky but tennis, golf, athletics etc. are easy. I will guarantee that every single sportswoman would rebuke this suggestion. Instead of earning millions playing on the woman's golf tour they would be earning a few thousand because they would not be able to compete. The number of women playing football professionally would decrease to zero overnight.

I agree about women's football coverage on the BBC. It is very niche for a handful of supports and should have the same exposure as similar minority sports.

Correct. But I care about these a great deal more than I care about Doncaster Belles v Charlton Ladies in the "who's goalkeeper will look more inept today ?" super league.

Had I, or indeed if I, within my lifetime earn an absolute shitload of cash, then it'll go to housing the homeless and other variously worthwhile causes. What it most certainly won't go towards is rocketing wankers like Justin Beiber and Tom Cruise into space. Richard Branson. The most risible c*nt that ever lived! I see that it's not your fault again, Richard.

Been to buy a condolence card today. Pretty much every one ran to the theme of "[some sort of sentiments towards]your loved one". "Your loved one"?! Is there a worst example of attempted personalisation coming across as quite so impersonal.

Did you consider writing a letter rather than buying a bit of cardboard schmaltz, Prufrock?

I managed to find one that just said 'Thinking of you' in it so plenty room to write a proper message. I'm not necessarily against cards (for certain occasions), but those struck me as particularly empty. Might as well have read "[insert dead person's name here]". Some even had the really twee Valentine's Day poems in!
