Wrote to Clive James a couple of weeks ago. Got a response from his PA today saying that he appreciated my letter but due to his ill-health is no longer well enough to respond personally. Doesn't sound good

In a world that has decided
That it's going to lose its mind
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind.

He's been predicting his own demise for a while. I hope he hasn't read his horoscope in the Sun today.Prufrock wrote:Wrote to Clive James a couple of weeks ago. He'll be missed ... a great wit and racontuer.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

De-emphasis happens to all of us in time, alas.KeyserSoze wrote:I can't escape the feeling that I'm being slowly phased out at work.
On the one side it's understandable as I'm leaving in Jan, and maybe I should even be happy as it allows me more time to come up with ideas or doss.
It's annoying however as it's got to the point where I'm not being invited or even aware of meetings which, given i'm still here for the next seven weeks, I feel I should be at. And it's not like I'm leaving the company, either.
Hmmm.

Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about driving across the Forth Bridge only to notice that they're building a new one. When did that come about? Further, what's wrong with the existing two? I now fully expect to be labelled an 'ignorant Guffy' by our Caledonian contributors.

May the bridges I burn light your way

Fecking ignorant guffy. There's nothing wrong with the properly-built rail bridge however the jerry-built road bridge is falling to bits already (the cables are slowly snapping) so they're building a new one. Unfortunately they've decided to call it something like St Margaret's Crossing and not my preferred option of Salmond's Leap.Bruce Rioja wrote:Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about driving across the Forth Bridge only to notice that they're building a new one. 73 people died building the rail bridge. Hopefully there'll be none for the Third of Forth. (It's actually to be called the The Queensferry Crossing - the queen was Margaret - who established the first ferry.)Bruce Rioja wrote:Little Green Man wrote:FeckinFecking ignorant guffy. The blokes that operate those tower cranes on the tops of the supports they've erected must have bollocks of steel. I felt uneasy, to say the least, just looking at them.

St. Margaret was Scotland's only royal saint. Oddly she was the daughter of an exiled Saxon (Wessex) royal prince and born in Hungary - so much for Celtic bloodlines.Little Green Man wrote:Fecking ignorant guffy. Canonised in recognition of her personal holiness, fidelity to the Church, work for religious reform, and charity plus her role as wife of Malcolm in Macbeth.

Well, she wasn't Scots as I pointed out. I presume Bobo knows more about canonization that I do - I guess miracles are a more modern requirement.William the White wrote:Not even one miracle??? What did you write about?
I have similar concerns that I'm never going to get the Brian Sewell TV interview that I want...

I thought you said she was a Royal Princess in Scotland. Whatever her genealogy that makes her a Scots aristocrat in my book!Montreal Wanderer wrote:Well, she wasn't Scots as I pointed out. She was a Queen actually (married Malcolm III Canmore of Macbeth fame), but your logic would make George I English...William the White wrote:I thought you said she was a Royal Princess in Scotland.
