Well. Feck that!
In a world that has decided
That it's going to lose its mind
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind.

Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind.

Lot of trust in those metal pegs hammered into the rock.
Re: Today I'm happy about......
it was taken by "adventure photographer" Gordon Wiltsie, 57 - he's an accomplished climber himself - but makes his living with extreme sport photos and has recently been admitted to the National Geographic explorers hall of fame...Bruce Rioja wrote:Indeed. there's a gallery of his extreme rock-climbing/camping photos here: number two of the 17 - that's what freestyle handholds are like - what they do is fecking amazing!!
(the guys we first started talking about take days off on the climb to allow enough skin to grow back on their fingers...)

As a segue to anothere thread...
Caldwell's last brush with news worthy of attention from National Public Radio and The New York Times was in 2000, when he and his climbing team were taken hostage by Islamic rebels for six days in southwestern Kyrgyzstan. Caldwell pushed an armed kidnapper off a cliff to escape. He was haunted by thoughts that he had killed a man until 2003, when the kidnapper showed up alive.

Bizarre. Probably the last place you'd expect to see an Islamic rebel would be on the side of a ruddy mountain! ! (Unless of course he was taking it to MuhammedMontreal Wanderer wrote:As a segue to anothere thread...

So they climb a cliff carrying with them everything including food, water, stove and the kitchen sink.
WHY?
If they do make it to the top they then have to come down again, which I surmise would be even more difficult.
I live in an area where there are many steep cliffs and waterfalls which climbers find a challenge. There are even 'BASE' jumpers pitting themselves against gravity and the unknown quality of their safety gear. All too often these 'adventures' finish with other people risking their own lives to rescue (or retrieve the bodies of) those who failed.
Hrmph!

I assume they walk down the other side where there is a nice set of steps. I was there in 2006 but decided not to walk up a vertical kilometre, which would be closer to two all uphill.Dujon wrote:So they climb a cliff carrying with them everything including food, water, stove and the kitchen sink.

This is Jorgeson on pitch 15 - the most difficult pitch, holding the last but one hold before his final transition which included a leap across to clutch a hold as equally precarious as the one he's on.

and here he is on (pitch 12?)
