^^ It's dated 16 August though. That's a long time till it's been noticed, you could almost have had a baby meanwhile.

Not that it alters the gist of the comments I suppose.

... & Worthy, maybe he lived next door to Alice ?

Ha, hadn't noticed that. I guess the fact it's taken that long to get noticed is a metaphor for...something, I suppose.

That letter was widely circulated at the time of closure. It's a shame because it was a handy port of call after a night out and the lads who worked there were a good laugh. It was busy at weekends as well but I guess that's not enough. Bolton torn centre is depressing though.

Ps I never did see Alice. I think it was the chippy version of Blake's Seven.

Son #2 had an exam in Cardiff today. Went over by train from London .... unfortunately the train had to stop near Slough. He texted at around 9am to say he was delayed because it seems the train had hit someone. That's terribly sad for the person, his family and also the train driver.

Regarding his more trivial issue the examiners were informed and he was able to arrive late and go into an ante-room and start the exam later than planned as he'd met no-one who'd seen the paper ... good flexibility.

He called tonight and explained a little more.

He had been in the first carriage. The train had hit the man who has simply stood in front of it. The front windows, including the one by his seat, were covered with red-mist and bits of what had previously been a person.

I pride myself on being difficult to phase but Jesus wept, that's not how anyone's day should go.

F*ck me, how is he? Almost perversely that sounds like the sort of thing you could do an exam straight after, but not a few days later once it sinks in. Hope he's all right.

A very nasty shock and reaction can set in later as Prufrock noted. As in all things time is a healer so good luck to him.

^^ He said last night that his exam went in a blur and he's not sure he made a great deal of sense. He's not given to excuse making but I've told him to ensure the examiners (who are internal to the Uni) know of his experience.

He mentioned that the train slowed very quickly (is that even English ... can you 'slow quickly' ??) and then there was a "thud". The thud was both felt and heard and the noise was sort of repeating to him. So yes, some delayed shock is possible. I can't even imagine how the driver copes with all this.

The lad doesn't even drink so my normal advice is redundant.

Terrible news that Bobo hope he does alright.

Everyone has different ways of coping with trauma and stress, it can just help to make sure that a person is dealing with it. Although it could be that he desensitised to such a gory occurrence?

I was on Claremont Road at the junction with princess Road this afternoon and happened to see the funeral cortege for Clarence Edwards, a local youth who got himself murdered a few weeks back. Clarence was carried in a white coffin drawn by black horses. The funeral directors were pillion passengers on quad bikes. The cortege consisted of around 100 cars all with the drivers wearing masks and with many passengers seated on the window edges with their bodies hanging out of the windows. Also there were around 100 off-road motorcycles all without registration and all the riders without helmets. They were riding recklessly on the wrong side of the road and pulling wheelies as they crossed this very busy junction. The Police were there (four PCSO's) and assisted in closing the road for them as they passed by.

Since then the motorcycles have been creating chaos around south Manchester and there are numerous mentions of them on local social media. I was out for a walk an hour ago and saw two of them being pursued at high speed by a Police BMW through the heart of Chorlton.

It'll end in tears, if it already hasn't.

I used to work not far from the West Coast Mainline just on the outskirts of London for a couple of years. There were at least half a dozen occasions when we saw, from afar, the emergency services scraping up what was (or perhaps more pertinently what wasn't) left of some poor soul. It seemed to be happening all the time. Very sad way to go. Apparently they lie down between the tracks and just stand up at the last moment, giving the drivers no chance whatsoever. With rather grim coincidence, when I first moved to London someone committed suicide in front of the train I was on and I was late for my first day there.

Aye - looks that way. Should just fence off a section of Hough End and leave them to it.
