Of course it is! Any business thinking of setting up shop here isn't going to think: well, corporation tax is the lowest in the developed world, skills are good, wages are low, but you know what, I think I could take the PM in a fight, so f*ck it, let's try France instead. I know, I know, they can only work 12 hours a week and we have to pay them forty euros an hour, and all our profits are going to be taken and invested in cheese, but look at Hollande, he's cheating on the woman he cheated on his wife with - all man! Never played on a ZX Spectrum in his life!

Yes, you need leadership, but that's not determined by who seems more or less geeky. Miliband has spent five years in opposition against a v unpopular Tory party, never been as far ahead in the polls as you'd expect, constantly less popular than his party, constantly jumped on for his "gaffes" and yet no rebellion. The man can lead. You might also want to ask David if Ed's ruthless enough.

Also, the city doesn't punch make so much money because we punch above our weight. We punch above our weight (partially) because the city makes so much money (it also then f*cks everyone over and gets bailed out, but hey ho - and also it's partially because we used to own half the world and they haven't figured out yet that we're really small). Do you think the only thing stopping us being kicked off the G7 and the Security Council is that Cameron exudes authority?

Also also, there's not a bastard's chance in a frozen over hell that Sturgeon is going to end up PM! It's Ed or Dave!

I agree with what you're saying but I haven't seen much evidence of Ed being an example of a good leader.

I take some of your points Pru, but having a leader who appears strong and has the respect of the US might just stop Vladimir walking into the odd Baltic state or two. Milliband can't even command the respect of his own party, a serious flaw in a leader. It'll be interesting to see what the FTSE does in the event of a Labour win, but I'm taking a wild guess the market will take a fairly big hit. That's because business has no confidence in Ed either. If he does make PM, God forbid, I'll be having a punt on a leadership challenge within 12 months.

Even if he does make it to number 10. I can't see him having a workable majority, which means Ed will have Sturgeon watching over his shoulder taking the whip hand on each and every decision he makes, which will make for a chaotic ride. Add in to that increased public spending, a large hike in taxes, burgeoning debt and we could end up in a similar position to Spain, Portugal or God forbid, Greece. Interesting times and a fascinating month to come.

You do remember John Major don't you? I reckon even I could have given him a good shoe-ing

Having Cameron in charge hasn't stopped him flying jets into our airspace now, never mind the Baltics. I'm not sure Valdimir recognises the Toff/Geek distinction when it comes to British leaders. On the one hand we're insignificant enough that he's not going to be too bothered about winding us up, whoever's in charge - I don't think our election will affect whether Putin does the same in Estonia as he has done in Ukraine; on the other hand, we could elect Natalie Bennett on a lovely do-good ticket and any Russian military action actually against us is going to be enough to get the Americans involved. They'll let stuff go in Ukraine, not in West Europe!

Ed does terribly on "leadership scores" with the public, and fails to "command the respect" of the public, but Labour are more united than the Tories. He's got Balls and Cooper on side and after them there's no-one credible who could take him on. They're hardly going to rally behind Diane bloody Abbott! There were the odd few hints last year but hardly anything given how far he trials Cameron personally. Cameron on the other hand has the typical back-bench Tory lot banging their drum on Europe, a battle he doesn't want but has to pay lip-service too. TBF, whichever one of them is PM will probably be fine, neither party has much in reserve.

Not convinced any worries the markets would have re:Ed aren't cancelled out by worries re: EU referendum. Labour are hardly Syriza or Podemos. They're just talking about cutting the deficit more slowly and having slightly less brutal spending cuts. Economically there's very little between them other than Ed's tub-thumping on energy prices. Point taken on Sturgeon, but if that happens, and if it's a disaster, that's not going to be because Ed's a wet lettuce but because the people have voted for the more left-y parties (out of some not very lefty parties!).

I'm unsure on what peed me off more today. The Tories latest desperate attempt to link Labour and the SNP, or shadow cabinet ministers all trying to demonstrate how committed they were to Trident.

It would be heartening if at least a few socialists in the Labour party, in this time of record numbers of food banks, were arguing about scrapping the whole nuclear arsenal

See, I have a simple rule of thumb here. Should I need to be in London 20 minutes earlier, then I'll catch an earlier train. :conf:

Tell you what's fecked up though, my nephew needed to get from Aberdeen to Glasgow. Ended up going BA via Heathrow as it was far cheaper than the train. No wonder the planet is fecked.

Oh, and Heathrow wouldn't need another runway if they stopped taking folk to London instead of where they want to go

The last two times that I've flown to Atlanta I've flown once to Amsterdam and once to Paris (as well as returning) first. Anything to avoid Heathrow. It's a fecking nightmare.

I've only seen the title, but I agree, it should be banned. 'Sport' at the expense of animals is not right.

I thought, given that animals blow off large amounts of greenhouse gases the greens would be out to eliminate them :conf:

Really?

An Anytime single rail fare from Aberdeen to Glasgow is showing as £39.20 and return £68.80.

Can't believe flights via Heathrow would work out cheaper, also need to factor in travel to/from city centres
to/from Dyce/Paisley. Furthermore the time it would take to fly via Heathrow, a Citylink bus between Aberdeen and Glasgow would
likely be way faster.
