I quite liked Allardyce's approach to these games - let the squad players have a run out, but have your big-hitters on the bench in case we need bailing out.
May the bridges I burn light your way

Me too. Different strength of squad then though. Even then we got beat in a few doing that!

Few clues possibly from tonight's U21 team. No Finney, Taylor, Threlkeld or Woolery in the squad tonight. Assuming they will be in the match day squad tomorrow, (or are injured).

Also no Kellett, Lussey or Twardzik. Medo gets a game again though.

I always felt some of our prospects missed out with Allardyces approach to cup games against lower league opponents. Instead of introducing one or two fringe players to play with established first teamers he chucked in so many changes it was akin to a reserve side and they would have learnt nowt.

Yep Medo got a game tonight and was poor, particularly in the first half when a poor pass from him gifted them their goal.

Hoping we start a strong team and get the win under our belt. I expect that Vela and Davies will come in for Spearing (Suspended) and Prats (Rest that ankle) from the team that started on Saturday. The others stay in. We really don't have a deep squad. The kids can come off the bench for some experience in the 2nd half after we have scored a couple and not conceded any.

Two forced changes - BN reporting that Pratley has a knock (and could also miss the Boro match) and Spearing is suspended.

Lennon in the BN:
I want to progress. We will go into every competition the same way. I was fortunate to win this competition a couple of times so I know how important it is to players and to clubs. There are only three competitions we play in so I don’t want to be missing out on one early on. We are at home which is great and we have to maximise the home advantage.

They had a good win at the weekend against Scunthorpe who would maybe be one of the fancied teams for promotion so it’s a good start for Jimmy. We watched them the previous weekend against Derby and they are a good side.

Jimmy has carried on the good work done there by Gary Rowett and that’s not an easy thing to do. The transition from Gary to Jimmy has been pretty seamless so I think he has done a terrific job.

Jimmy is a big personality and for him to go and take a job on like that speaks volumes for what he wants to get out of football management. It is quite easy for players with that persona to not put the application in but Jimmy has done that.
And on changes:
Obviously we have enforced changes but I don’t want to make too many – I have to respect the opposition. Tom Walker trained most of last week and looked good. I just wanted to go with experience at the weekend. We had a strong bench as well so Tom was unfortunate to miss out but he will come into our thoughts for tonight.

Derik and Wheater are still about a week away, while Tim Ream will be a doubt for the weekend. It's no ordinary dead leg. Speaking to (physic) Steve Megson, he said it’s probably the worst one he has seen in his career. The muscle damage and bleeding was quite intense. He’s lucky there was no calcification because with the thigh it can be career-threatening. It is just a case of healing with time.

More than a knock, Doc - ligament damage, says a slightly strangely proud NL in BN.
Darren Pratley went in for a tackle very early on – I think it was the incident when Bryson got injured for Derby. He felt it but had it strapped up at half time and played on which is exactly what I want. He was hurt but played through the pain barrier. He has had a scan and unfortunately there is a bit of ligament damage there which may keep him out for a week or two.

Hopefully it’s nothing more serious but he will see a specialist. We are pretty confident there is no surgery required. It will just be a question of rehabilitation on that. But he has shown the attitude that I want. He has maybe sacrificed himself for a week or two but he played through the pain and played very well.

I know what you mean with strangely proud. By all means compliment him on his tenacity, but don't encourage him and others to play on and risk further injury. Bizarre.

All the other CB's injured. 2 games in 3 days after just arriving sounds too much - even for a prince among men..
