The athletics/running thread

If you have a life outside of BWFC, then this is the place to tell us all about your toilet habits, and those bizarre fetishes.......

Goes without saying.

Just had the results through. Swim 12.24 Run 26.41 Overall 39.05

Fourth race in 5 leaves me 4th in age group overall.

I may pinch third on the last race. If the guy above me doesn't show up.

I had a jog round with my returning friend who has not run for 2 years and recently had a baby. 35 mins + but we were just happy to get round without incident.
Sounds like you're training well GtE, I've been doing nothing. Currently 13 stone and my race weight was 10st8, although I did look like I'd been dug up. It's mainly on my belly but will drop off with a few booze free weeks.
Swimming and cycling the way forward I think with minimum running for the time being.

I'm maintaining 12 and a half which is fine for me. Swimming is pretty consistent. Running not so good. I did a 10 miler on Sunday with the back 5 slow 'cos my knee wonked out. Got the GNR in a few weeks and I'm going to struggle I think. Hey ho though you only live once!

Got as far as Blenheim Road before realising that I had left mine and LE's match tickets at home. The question was to go straight back for them and miss PR, or go after the run and delay breakfast. Guess which one won??

I'm staying away from speed work for a while and making this the year of 5hit or bust re injuries. If I break down this time, I'm on the bike.

To that end I've employed a personal trainer to help with conditioning and injury prevention. Got up to 11.5 miles this weekend. Furthest I've ran in quite a while. Only hope it lasts

At my pace I never did speed work.

Good work on the conditioning. You should try a tri.

AND my new NB running pumps (avec Nike+ gizmo) three pairs of running shorts, Nike tracky bottoms and 3 x running t-shirts are all in my lost luggage. Will have to run in the Walsh knobbly fellas on Satdi, and, as was tradition at our school for those that turned up with no kit.......... :D

I'm hearing the sound of acScouse-style insurance claim right now.

Good luck but keep it real.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I probably should. Watching my brother in law complete iron man last month certainly left me feeling envious. Like many who did it, you'd never describe him as athletic but what he did have was great mental strength and he avoided injury by barely running during his training. Swimming is deadly dull though isn't it? :|

Not at all, Bobo. I'm fearing that they'll think exactly that when I tell them that in addition to that there's an M&S suit, 4 M&S shirts, 2 silk ties, a pair of Levi's and a Lauren polo shirt - all in a Tumi luggage carrier. (All true).

Bring it along, just in case what kit I have left makes me look ridiculous. :D

You won't melt you soft c**t!

Swimming in a pool is dull. Necessary evil though. Especially in Winter. Have a look out for tri clubs in the area. They should have access to a couple of Open Water courses. You'll need that.

I like the minimalist running idea. I know it's a marathon but it represents less than a quarter of the whole race. Good thinking!

^ ouch!

I went swimming in my lunchtime last week. Just plodding up and down the lanes dodging old dears, kids on school holidays and the odd paedo suspect. God it were grim. Not being very good at it doesn't help either!

If you do less running in the build up to it to avoid injury, you're well capable of getting a really good time at next year's G.

Get thesen to a coached swim session, far better than public pools. I'm sure the couple of times I've been to Horwich Baths recently I've seen adverts for it.

You have to train for EVERYTHING on Ironman. Swim to bike, bike to run. All takes practice.
