For me, Nolan has done his bit here and I'm very thankful for his previous contribution. However, to re sign him, in my opinion would be a mistake. Too old, too slow, too much of a gamble, no matter how 'cheap' we could acquire his services for. We should and I'm certain Mr Lennon is, looking at younger, quicker, hungrier players with a point to prove.
As for Wellington; no, I for one had not heard of him before he landed at the Macron.

Horses for courses. An emergency stop gap and a gamble upon experience which kept us in the division. I may be wrong, but I don't see Emile as our future. And the pair were hardly 'snapped up' now, were they? It would be interesting to know if Eidur would have returned if another club had offered him an extra grand a week?

Andy Carroll's record starting games alongside Kevin Nolan is a goal every 2.3 games. Outside of the games he's started with Nolan, he averages a goal every 4.3 games.

While you're on the abacus, out of interest, what's Carroll's scoring rate with and without Allardyce as manager? Or, perhaps an easier one: of Carroll's goals, how many have come from Nolan assists? As someone once said, everyone that confuses correlation with causation ends up dead eventually.

If you just take games he's started in the Premier League, he's scored 14 in 46 when managed by Big Sam (3.3 games per goal). Not managed by Big Sam he's scored 19 in 51 (2.7 games per goal).

Correlation doesn't equal causation, but the same applies to your own stat about goals Nolan has scored since turning 31. A result of terminal decline due to age? Possibly. Or a new style of play being imposed on his team from above that caused them to rely much less on him? He started 35 games in 2012/13 (10 goals), 33 in 2013/14 (7 goals) but then only 19 in 2014/15 (1 goal). Or just a bad season? In his early twenties for us he went 01/02 (8 goals), 02/03 (1 goal), 03/04 (9 goals).

And if you'd read the line before that, you'd see I mention - in the future tense - that the squads will be settling down. "As Premier squads settle down, there'll be those on the periphery – and I would hate to miss out on them because we've made somebody a cake." I don't yet know which forwards will be unwanted, so to suggest ideas now would be an entirely hypothetical listing of squad players who may or may not be available, may or may not affordable and may or may not want to come: how many TW readers had heard of Wellington two months ago?
