we did briefly have a "finishing school" reputation - after Coyle with young Jack...
(and Sturridge)
I suspect that's gone now...

Maybe, but young strikers are often risky. They might be good but not ready yet. I'm assuming that it will have to be a youngish premiership striker and sometimes they come off (Sturridge) and sometimes they don't (Afobe).thebish wrote:

we are where we are! our only realistically possible chance of obtaining a striker who might score enough goals to make it worth it in the position we are now is in the loan market. surely?

as are old crocks.. see items filed under Heskey - now injured for the rest of his life...BWFC_Insane wrote:Maybe, but young strikers are often risky. They might be good but not ready yet. Personally I would love to hear NL explain his reasoning & thinking around going into the season with Madine, Heskey & Dobbie as our 3 main strikers and how he thought this would improve us from last season - let's be honest Heskey should be retired by now, Madine wasn't wanted by Sheff Weds & Dobbie was at Fleetwood and struggling to get a game there.
It could be that it was purely financial and that they were all he could afford, and he knew that it was a big risk - however, if he actually thought that they would improve us from last season I would be very worried.

He was probably hoping Clough still knew where the goal was too, in fairness...Peter Thompson wrote:Personally I would love to hear NL explain his reasoning & thinking around going into the season with Madine, Heskey & Dobbie as our 3 main strikers and how he thought this would improve us from last season - let's be honest Heskey should be retired by now, Madine wasn't wanted by Sheff Weds & Dobbie was at Fleetwood and struggling to get a game there.

Very impressive GMR phone in with NL - he yet again came across as sincere & knowledgeable, you can't help but like the guy.
Without going into to much detail, he's here for the long term, he thinks it will take a couple more years to build a side good enough to challenge for promotion and wants a go at making the top 10 this year & play offs next season but he is fully committed to making us successful again and loves it here.
We had a striker in for talks today, and he is hoping the deal is done but isn't sure .
A rumour doing the rounds already is that it Marvin Emnes ?

that's reassuring - and at least sounds like some kind of a plan...

emnes... never heard of him - but he has impressive hair!!

Re: If carlsberg did transfer threads.....This would be it!
I'd be fairly happy if it was Emnes. He's another with no real track record of scoring goals, but I always thought he was decent enough.
Given the way Lennon was talking in the paper this morning I was expecting it to be some lump who can't get a game in League One. For a panic loan with no money to spend Emnes is ok.

Its just a rumour and is likely to be just that - NL didn't divulge any information at all, about the strikers identity - didn't even say it was a loan, just that we can only afford wages at this moment no fee's and just that he hoped that there would be something announced later this evening or tomorrow morning.thebish wrote:emnes... never heard of him - but he has impressive hair!!
He said that Spearing is unlucky not to be starting, but that was down to the form of M Davies & Danns (which obviously didn't go down well with me !, as did NL defending Feeney when someone rang in to say his delivery & crossing is awful).
He also said that Pisano is ready and may be in contention at the weekend, and he'd like to sign the Prince if at all possible.
Re: If carlsberg did transfer threads.....This would be it!
He did say there was enough money to bring in one player on loan, which I took to mean the guy who's been in today is a loan.
He also said we wouldn't be signing Kevin Nolan.

I can come across as sincere & knowledgeable, though not on here obviously and I could point out a few folk that definitely don't like the guy.Peter Thompson wrote:Very impressive GMR phone in with NL
He certainly talks a good game, I'm hopeful the fruits of his endeavour will become apparent in the not too distant future.

iirc he's scored a few v us ... which, of course, may not be that much of a recommendation currently.thebish wrote:emnes... never heard of him - but he has impressive hair!!
... & he's knicked that hair off Riga.
Rrrrrr-iiiiii-gaaaaahh
(& I checked Riga's post Bolton "progress'. It doesn't make good reading.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I'd be a lot more concerned if he didn't defend them.Peter Thompson wrote:Its just a rumour and is likely to be just that - NL didn't divulge any information at all, about the strikers identity - didn't even say it was a loan, just that we can only afford wages at this moment no fee's and just that he hoped that there would be something announced later this evening or tomorrow morning.thebish wrote:emnes... never heard of him - but he has impressive hair!!

Emnes is more a winger surely? Really do not think he is the answer. He's quick, not a target man and doesn't have a great goalscoring record. He's another not quite a striker. I really can't see it being him given everything Lennon said about needing physicality and goals. Emnes offers neither.

We need a Darren Bent type player, somebody skilful with a bit of muscle who know where the goals are. Easier said than done, granted, but it's what we need.
