Re: the Photo thread
pretty stunning!! nice job!
I love night time industrial/urban shots...
I have a friend who used to work at Canary wharf - and specialised in taking grainy, desaturated pics of the wharves and old buildings around that part of London... very different to the bright lights of salford quays - but stuff like this:

Re: the Photo thread
Friday evening was my areas Christmas party for the looked-after children (ie fostered kids) and I was asked if I could take photo's of Father Christmas in his grotto as he handed the pressies over. This was the best photo gig I have ever done! I loved every minute of it and had a huge grin over my face for most of it. Just seeing the wonder in these kids eyes as they looked at Father Christmas and were handed a present by him. It was fantastic! When asked what they wanted for Christmas most of them said 'Train set,' or 'motor bike' or 'doll' etc etc but two of them really brought me back down to earth; "What do you want for Christmas?" to a 10 year old boy got the answer 'To be happy,' and to a 12 year old lad 'For my brother to stop being frightened.'
Re: the Photo thread
further to the discussion about hdr the other day, I offer a real-world example..
I was asked to photograph the church building (my missus's gaffe) for a brochure they are doing...
this is how the camera wanted to expose the photograph and fairly close to the best a single shot could achieve: (much brighter would have blown out the stonework) The problem is caused by the sun and resultant shadows...

furrough cross church (non hdr) by revnev, on Flickr
this is the hdr version resulting from 5 separate and differently exposed shots combined into one:

I want to play "spot the ball" on these.
I reckon it's just to the right of that chimbley.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: the Photo thread
It must be me, but I prefer the top unadulterated picture. I know it's got 'heavy' shadows but I don't think they detract, and some parts of the HDR piccy look 'too false' - I'm thinking in particular the area of shadow on the main door, it gives it a translucent quality that hefty wooden doors shouldn't have.thebish wrote:further to the discussion about hdr the other day, I offer a real-world example..

Have to say, Bish, I'm more in the spotty oik's camp on this one. Is there a kind of halfway-through-the-process shot, if that makes any sense?thebish wrote:aye - it IS slightly overdone... and hdr does split the photography community pretty much down the middle...Lost Leopard Spot wrote:

Re: the Photo thread
I mentioned above about doing the Santa's Grotto photo's last Friday. I didn't notice at the time but whilst post-processing my heart stopped when I saw the name of the present they had given this little guy. He was the only one out of 90 kids that sat there and ripped the paper off. Worst choice of present ever for a looked-after child!

I like some of them very much, and some I find incredibly irritating, and I can't determine what it is that separates the two categories... I'll have to study them some more.thebish wrote:some of these are fab.. they are by Erik J - a 21 year old Swedish photographer
