Re: The Politics Thread
There has been barely a mention since that press conference of the laughable notion that he has divested his conflicts of interest by temporarily handing over the reigns of his businesses to his sons. It has been mentioned, but it is one of the biggest issues with him being President and it's more or less been a 'by the way, that's a bit dodgy isn't it?'. She can be as bad as she likes. There is nobody to challenge her in an electoral battle.
Let's think about it. We have Trump tweeting any old shite so the media focusses on the that instead of what actually matters. He made sure at a press conference about him divesting control of his businesses that everyone focussed on anything but his businesses by rambling on about his intelligence people talking shite and how the media spouts fake news. He's gotten away with little scrutiny on what really matters. By focussing on Corbyn getting something wrong, which may have been just a case of getting his words out wrong, no one is talking about May wasting months and having to back track on nearly everything she's said. That is a bigger issue and more consequential to all our futures. Yes, Corbyn is a crap leader of the opposition, but no one ever focusses on some fairly sensible things he tries to get debated because their too busy lapping up the media portrayal of him. Ed Milliband as irritating as he was, was no where near as incompetent as May, but we were all too concerned with his ability to eat a bacon butty to notice...led by a media with an agenda.
There is a world of difference in competence between Ed M and Jeremy C. And Ed M wasn't very good. But leagues, and leagues above Jeremy C.
Ultimately we have to live in the world we are in. And that means politicians appearing credible and in control and "managed" is ultimately very, very important. Especially on the "left" of the political spectrum.
You cannot win an election from the left preaching to the converted. Rather like Trump fanatics, Corbyn's mentalist supporters don't care what he does. They are a fanatical band who just put their fingers in their ears and pretend they are part of a "political revolution". This is very damaging to the country as a whole. Even many lifelong Tories want some form of effective opposition.

Trump's clever thing (I never thought those words would appear together!) is that he manages to make a big issue out of something to distract from the truly big issue.

Comparatively to his nationalistic rhetoric, his administration's constant threats and actions to suppress freedom of the press and free speech of govt officials, his words in support of torture, his seeming disregard of environmental issues, and his clearly provocative and dangerous international and domestic policy set (including building of this wall). Not to mention the seemingly deliberate and endless stream of pure propaganda the his white house now seems intent on peddling.

Well, a credible opposition at the very least scares a government. Especially one with a new leader, who presumably would very much like to win the next election.Lord Kangana wrote:AT has nailed it there. You really needn't worry about Corbyn that much. He's not making life-changing era defining decisions about your life on the basis of how to keep his party together and fight off UKIP.
And lets be clear, even if he was a credible opposition, those in charge have no need to put it to the test til 2020. The damage will be well and truly done by then.
Corbyn and the state of the Labour party in general is the most damaging thing in British politics right now IMO. An unfettered Tory government, with no prospect of change in power probably for at least another ten years. When Corbyn goes that party will need a total John Smith style re-build. If it has any serious politicians left to do it, that is.

Are you? You need to get a life. Errors? Clearly I did nothing of the sort. I would also refer you to one of the dissenting voices from the Supreme Court bench Lord Carnwath who, to paraphrase, said that it would have been better had the High and Supreme courts not become involved in this case as it had broader constitutional implications than the courts were competent to rule on.Prufrock wrote:I'm massively enjoying someone who argued we don't have a constitution giving a football-forum precis of the errors (s)he feels were made in a decision that's just been battled out in front of and between 13 of the best legal minds in the country. Oh, and by the way, the United Kingdom has no constitution in the accepted sense. Just an conglomeration of disparate documents, including the Magna Carta, which lawyers pretend makeup a comprehensive constitution but are in fact a means of extracting fees from the gullible (that includes both public bodies and private individuals). So stick that up your pipe.

Re: The Politics Thread
I think it's a major issue as there are massive conflicts of interest. Would we accept it if Jeremy Hunt owned major healthcare businesses in the UK and rest of world? I can't verify it, but I recall reading that Trump has interests in the pipeline that has been in the news. Obama put the block on it and one of the first things Trump does is ok it. If he has financial interests then it is a massive issue.BWFC_Insane wrote:

I agree he is dangerous on many policies and the propaganda etc, but the conflicts of interest are a major major issue that shouldn't be swept under the carpet because he tweets crazy shit.

I'm not arguing it isn't a major issue. Just that there are some catastrophic ones on top with Trump.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:I think it's a major issue as there are massive conflicts of interest. I'm assuming those are donations to campaigns? Somewhat more tenuous links than being invested in or owning directly. That said I do think there are issues around donations and folk walking straight into jobs after ministerial positions etc - see Lansley.BWFC_Insane wrote:I'm not arguing it isn't a major issue. I'd try to explain the concept of a dissenting judgment but I fear it may be a waste of both of our time.

No really, please do. I may massively enjoy your explanation too, although the chances of diminished legal arrogance are vanishingly small. Just between you and I, and it may be a false alarm, but I think there may be some changes to the legal framework involving Crown Courts and upwards. Such changes may not be good news for the profession.
Some may even call it vindictiveness by the government of the day.

Re: The Politics Thread
This Womens March, is a bit of a funny one..
The ringleader, Linda Sarsour, is an advocate of Sharia Law. She's seemingly successfully converted thousands of (you'd assume) intelligent women, including US politicians to Islam, which hardly puts women's rights on the top of their agenda.. She's also been tweeting hateful comments about a lady named Ayaan Hirsi Ali and saying she should have "her vagina taken away", so in essence, she wants to "grab em by the pussy" which is one of the comments, they are saying is so hateful, so sexist and hurtful, it deserves a protest... This lady she's been bullying, is a proper rights campaigner, seeing as she goes around spreading the word about Female Genital Mutilation, of which she is a victim. She turned her back on her faith as a result of that and has come in for massive criticism from Linda Sarsour and her 'cronies'.
Is it just me, who thinks there;'s more to all of this that meets the eye?
People protesting about Trump being "divisive"(he clearly is), but then kicking the f&ck out of anybody who doesn't totally share their views (how liberal) and this women's march somehow turning into a faith competition led by a pretty despicable woman.
W've also got Islamic State shouting about how they want to recruit left wing activists, because they share their ideals about the downfall of the West.
It's all gong a bit.. Erm... West

Oh, for those who wonder how the hell Trump got elected, I found this type of sentiment many times in various comment pieces, this one just about sums it up,
Who needs terrorists when half our country is against us?
The I hate white people club is getting bigger and bigger
Every ethic group in this country is proud to be who they are but when a white person is proud, we're racist!
Well go to hell

Erm... West
Lap it up, if you think that is more worrying than a dangerous, evil, angry man in charge of the nuke codes.![]()

I read the first bit. She thinks "Israel has a right to exist". Well blow me down. She must be a right nutter. Only the piece you linked me to, is trying to make that very argument.....I stopped reading.
There is a lot more about this woman who aligns herself with all sorts of movements, many who contradict each other in other articles but I didn't post them because clearly they were not written by your leftie luvies.
The woman is clearly on the make and building up to a career in politics, do your research, you'll find it true.
Oh and you'll find she already is well versed in the way of spinning porkies.

.," June 2009: "I get excited when Daniel Pipes writes about me. He's my publicist. When someone says you have a 'powerbase' that's like you walk down the street and have a million man march behind you. People want to talk to me all the time after he wrote all that crazy shit about me."
" March 16, 2010: "hatemongers like Daniel Pipes and Emerson Vermaat and others have tried to paint me as a Hamas Sympathizer and they have failed miserably. They actually have helped my career in so many ways. For them to think that I am so important of a person, so influential, that they tried to take me down, has actually made me just that - an important and influential person in the Arab and Muslim community nationally. I am frequently contacted by local, national and international media as an expert on Arab and Muslim issues or to gain the perspective of an Arab and Muslim - so THANK YOU Mr. Pipes!"
YOU'RE WELCOME, Ms Sarsour!
There's just one little problem with these two quotes. I hate to pop Sarsour's balloon, but until this blog I never wrote about her. Indeed, until today, I'd never even heard of her. So, whatever great things you have achieved, Linda, you did them on your own, without benefit of help from me.

Re: The Politics Thread
He and his administration are trying to suppress the truth. I personally think that is pretty evil. Define it how you like.boltonboris wrote:Nothing he's done yet, has shown to be evil. The ringleader, Linda Sarsour, is an advocate of Sharia Law. She's seemingly successfully converted thousands of (you'd assume) intelligent women, including US politicians to Islam, which hardly puts women's rights on the top of their agenda.. I certainly think he is orders of magnitudes more worrying than the women who are protesting. Frankly I'm more concerned by someone who would condemn a protest.
