A sucessfull joke at this level.
Would you rather be in the Prem with Holloway, or in the First Division with Freedman ?????
Its the Prem with Holloway for me. (given the choice)
We have no chance of promotion, no matter who the manager is ?
Might as well throw in the towel now.

No, he's saying that Holloway is an eejit who, overall, many would prefer to not to have here even over a struggling Freedman.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Hang on, you could point to all sorts of managers that managed clubs that have been promoted from this division - Phil Brown, Tony Mowbray, Steve Bruce, Mick McCarthy - don't mean that they're any better than Douglas, does it?davroduk wrote:Took Blackpool up from this divisionBruce Rioja wrote:Good heavens, no. And I admit Holloway is not the best thing since sliced bread.
And I also admit that I might (might I say) be clutching at straws, but (Ok its not a big but), at this precise moment in time ...............
Oh feck it, lets just stay with Freedman and be sh1t !!!!

or....
let's stick with Freedman and recognise that it is a long slow job to turn the club around from its long and arduous decline. we'd all like it to be quicker - but then there's lots of stuff we'd all like that we aren't gonna get... Freedman's as likely as anyone to rebuild us into summat better if given the time needed and if not harassed and panicked by the threat of being fired every other week hanging over his head...

Re: Freedman out!
Maybe Palace will want Freedman back now!
All this talk about which manager got them promoted is one thing, but like Tango might say it's the players who cross the white line.
Without having studied Palace too deeply Zaha and Murray both had good seasons. If we had the league's best winger crossing to the league's most prolific scorer we'd probably have scored a late winner on Saturday and we'd probably be in the play-off places.

The players you fail to sign never lose you any money.

Going off that frame of mind we would still have

Megson
Coyle
Given the time needed, could mean what ?
Months, years, decades ??

years.
Re: Freedman out!
Just for the record - Holloway has been promoted three times in 17 years as a manager. In the same period he has also been relegated three times.
Dougie has only been a manager since January 2011. He is hardly going to have a superior record to most other average managers in the lower divisions.
Recently I have not heard anyone on this forum saying Freedman is a great manager. Just some, like me, who think it does no good getting a new manager every season. For long term success we need stability. Dougie may be a success or a failure at Bolton, only time will tell, but I think he should be given more time to rebuild. That probably means beyond this season when he will get another opportunity to get rid of the deadwood.

Re: Freedman out!
It doesn't have to be a "slow job" to turn it around. Freedman is a poor manager and he got us into the play-off spots last year for a brief moment, so I have no doubt that if the right man came in, he'd be able to get us into the play-offs and potentially win them. Unrealistically, if someone like Ferguson took over, we'd win the league with games to spare but realistically, I see no reason why a better manager than Freedman couldn't get us into the play-offs with the squad we have. To write it off as being a slow job is wrong, I think; under Freedman it will be a slow job because he's taking us backwards but under the right manager, we can still do something this year. I think a good appointment would ensure we finish in the top 10 at least, and then there's always the chance of reaching the play-offs.thebish wrote:or....

Why is he "as likely as anyone"? What as he done to warrant such faith? He didn't achieve anything at Palace, he had a good 10 game period with us and that's it. There's no reason to have faith in him. He has an poor overall record as a manager when you compare him to others in the division. Statistically, how many managers are worse than Freedman in this league? Someone like Pulis is far more capable of rebuilding us than Freedman is.thebish wrote:Freedman's as likely as anyone to rebuild us into summat better if given the time needed and if not harassed and panicked by the threat of being fired every other week hanging over his head...

Re: Freedman out!
Stability is only a good thing when that manager is worthy of it. Should Sunderland have kept Di Canio, just for the sake of stability? Should Sheffield United have kept Weir? Of course not. It can be harsh sometimes but it's often better to act quickly and decisively. If a manager is taking the club nowhere - and I think that sums up Freedman - then there's no reason to persist with them.malcd1 wrote:Recently I have not heard anyone on this forum saying Freedman is a great manager. There's no reason to have faith that Freedman can turn things around, so why does he deserve more patience? He should have gone several games ago for me, when our season was more salvageable than it is now.

Reasons and faith are the interesting things here.SmokinFrazier wrote: There's no reason to have faith that Freedman can turn things around, so why does he deserve more patience? He should have gone several games ago for me, when our season was more salvageable than it is now.
I think there are reasons to believe Freedman can turn the whole club around, despite how shite this season has been so far. You may call that faith beyond what we can see, I reckon there are different ways to see what's going on...
Not to mention we can't afford to sack him anyway and the prospective list just has Tony Mowbray's name on it.

Jimmy Phillips will be the manager if Duggie is sacked.

I think I've heard all that before... you are more than entitled to your oft-peddled opinion. If we only ever put faith in people who had already proved themselves - then there would never be any new talent being established. I like the cut of Dougie's jib - and there are enough intangibles in football management for me not to get too excited by so-called proven track records other other managers manging other players at different times and in different places.
Pulis has never rebuilt Bolton in these circumstances at this time - he'd be just as much of a lottery - picking a manager is a lottery.
I know you think it is some kind of stat-led science... but I don't! there!

Re: Freedman out!
I'm surprised that no-one has picked you up on this line you've been taking over the last couple of weeks, so I guess its down to me.
If any of you fancy coming to me for some urgent brain surgery, feel free, I'll give it my best shot. Because, and lets all be honest with ourselves here, brain surgery is always a gamble so just because somebody else has done it better in the past doesn't indicate they will continue to do so in the future.
Now can we get the discussion back on track?

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.
