I agree with LK. He's pointed out that, rather than a bustling touristy part of the Lakes, this is an area more synonymous with floods and devastation and kids being killed in coach crashes recently. It's easy to think that it's just a part of the recession hit country, but when you factor in events of the recent past, it's one of those areas that's hit harder than most.
The most gutting thing about this story is that, rather than being called "a loner that kept himself to himself", Bird is being described as "a lovely man who had the time of day for everyone, enjoyed a laugh and a joke", etc. Suppose the truth will come out soon enough, but not the identikit killing spree nutjob that stereotypically fits these incidents so easily....

This. No doubt lessons can be learned for others after this. But this is a once in a lifetime occasion, especially somewhere so remote. I doubt you can ever really be ready for this, especially when most of you time is spent rescuing posh knobheads who are stuck up mountains.William the White wrote:Have to say it's hard to imagine the Cumbrian police being well trained and up to speed on random killers roaming the roads of one of England's largest counties with one of its smallest police forces (for good reason)...
What has happened is beyond horrible but I'd be slow to judgement here...

The second paragraph is what makes this all the more scary. Of course it's early, but so far there seems to have been little obvious indications this guy could flip. The only comforting factor normally, and I use that term in it's loosest of meanings, is often it seems to be deranged loners. This guy seems to have been a normal guy who one day lost it. Awful, awful stuff.KeeeeeeeBaaaaaaab wrote:I agree with LK. Cleary you like LK are clueless about the area so why pass judgement like that!!!KeeeeeeeBaaaaaaab wrote:I agree with LK. West Cumbria is a shit-hole... & yes, I do know the area well. The villages like Egremont, Frizington, Rowrah ... and towns like Whitehaven and Workington (& Barrow, to stretch the geography) are generally awful. There are nice enough individual properties, hamlets and even OK areas in the towns, but generally they are desperate places.
The people are generally a strange bunch, not bad people, but ones who ... if you don't come from there ... you would find difficult to fathom. (mind you, try living in west Wales). This is common to many rural areas, of course. They have to cut their own lives and sort themselves out and their norms don't fit ours.
However, I don't see how any of this can be linked to this specific tragedy and it's wrong to make cheap links to confirm pre-existing opinions as some people are already doing. As early as last evening some of the anti-gun lobby were trying to jump on this.
The police could never, ever, in a place of this scale, have closed a guy down in a 3 hrs time period. It seems, by all initial reports, the gun's he had were properly licenced and his history showed no weird tendency to personality issues. He appears to have had one almighty problem with a family member (his twin brother) and he's flipped ... horribly. This does appear to have been something no-one could have predicted or stopped.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I imagine they'll be behind it somehow.CAPSLOCK wrote:I suspect Israel may have questions to answer
I'm keeping right out of that one, as I worked out there (from here, going in & out) for over 15yrs and I may be in danger of actually knowing what the fck I'm talking about & that just wouldn't do, would it ?!

I'd be interested anyway - have lived and worked in an Arab country but have never been to Israel.
re. this whole shooting incident...
am I alone in being irritated by the way these things are reported nowadays? I mean the 24-hr news world where hours on end have to be filled - and loooong before anyone has the faintest idea what has happened "experts" and locals are paraded across the airwaves to speculate - extended news specials - phone-ins.. etc etc...
it's tragedy porn - isn't it?? we are invited to feast upon the tragedy in all of its detail... there's something about that that repels me.
this morning I heard Stephen Nolan advertise the R5 phone-in by saying: "I'm sure all over the country people are filled with mixed emotions - sadess, grief, anger - and I'm sure you'll all have a need to air those feelings and emotions on our airwaves..."
at lunchtime today they introduced a psychiatrist with the words...
"nobody knows what motivated him to do this" but we have dial-a-psychiatrist here to speculate...
she then told us that we didn't really know anything
when asked how people would react - would they all need counselling? she said - some might, some might not.
when asked how children would react - she basically said they were all diferent and would react in different ways...
there's a total waste of 10mins airtime.
tomorrow - Cameron will go and visit with teresa May - will that be "NEWS" - given that he has to go and we know what he will say (not saying it is wrong for him to go - just asking if it is actually "news" - I am sure i will be extensively and fully covered with many legions of news crews..... he has no choice - he is going because he has to be seen to go - we all know the game...)
anyway - probably not expressed very well - but after a day or so I always feel like I am being invited into some (for want of a better phrase) "tragedy porn"....
anyone else - or is it just me? other people I know seem to lap it all up and savour every detail.....

I'm sure it'd be fine - as long as you add "FACT" and/or "ITK" at the end!

No, it isn't just you. The BBC newsreader asked the local MP if he was worried about the Cumbria area being tagged with Hungerford etc. He fell right in the trap. Why couldn't he just say "It isn't about Cumbria, it's about a man going off the rails and killing people in his area. It could happen anywhere".thebish wrote:

Which it could.

Sorry, just going off what relatives of residents of said area - who are my friends, and have been talking to me about the area today - are saying. Sorry. Shouldn't use them next time and just shut up.

I don't think you would, Tango. Let me explain. There is a world of difference between someone with a genuine concern (ie you) and someone that can't wait to spread bad news and obtain some sort of perverse thrill by putting the wind up people by suggestion that their children might be not only in imminent danger, but that they could even be dead. (Gertie's neighbour).TANGODANCER wrote: Think if I'd been your neighbur I'd have done the same Gert.

Fair enough. I mean, I thought it was a pertinent point that my mates had made about the area, but suppose it's open to interpretation. Suppose I was sort-of jumping the gun on circumstances and rationales (if there's ever a rationale for gunning down innocent members of the public).Hobinho wrote:Nawww just a bit sensitive about this sorry.KeeeeeeeBaaaaaaab wrote:Hobinho wrote:Cleary you like LK are clueless about the area so why pass judgement like that!!!KeeeeeeeBaaaaaaab wrote:I agree with LK. Some fckg bozo on BBC Morning News today was speculating that, as he'd heard the shooter had received A&E treatment for a bang on the head 3 (THREE) years ago his sudden out of character actions this week could be the result of a delayed reaction to that.thebish wrote:re. this whole shooting incident...

He then spent an age explaining that this was simply a possibiity, not that he had any evidence, nor knew any more facts, but that it could, possibly, just, maybe the reason.
