Exactly... We wouldn't even be approaching the club, before we've spoke to his agent.. It's just how it works. You sound them out firstAbdoulaye's Twin wrote:If anything was afoot, the agent would know. It might not be legit, bit players are routinely sounded out about moves very early so clubs don't waste weeks haggling over someone that has no interest whatsoever.

As ever. Little hints here & there. Pointless little "in the know" remarks. Eventually something happens and he claims that as what he was hinting at.Lord Kangana wrote:I'm fairly certain he will have used some weasel words to indicate that we both might and might not sign him, so it clearly won't be interpreted as a miss.Puskas wrote:Think we can score this one as a miss for Mr Nixon.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Puskas wrote:Sorry, BWFCi but it's not a stupid point - when trying to evaluate his accuracy, you have to be able to judge whether he thinks a player will be signed or not. Or, at the very least, whether the club are even making an effort to sign him.BWFC_Insane wrote:This is a stupid point because any situation you may or may not sign a player. How can he say "you will sign X" without a crystal ball? He can only tell you what is (or what he believes) to be happening at any particular moment.Lord Kangana wrote:I'm fairly certain he will have used some weasel words to indicate that we both might and might not sign him, so it clearly won't be interpreted as a miss.Puskas wrote:

If he says, "The club have made enquiries for player X" and the club deny it, then either:
a) He's wrong; or
b) The club are lying.
If he then says, "ah, but circumstances, blah, blah..." then he's acting like self-described psychics do, and trying to get people to count his hits but not his misses. If his claims aren't at least potentially falsifiable then they're worthless.
FWIW, I think he used to have a lot of good information when his matewas [were] at the club, and now has some, but less - he knows more than me about what's happening, for instance, but that's not difficult.
I mean nobody would suggest he is 100% accurate. Not even our local paper is 100% accurate and they supposedly only print when things are confirmed by the club.
My view with Nixon has always been that for whatever reason (and I can't imagine what posesses him to do this) he tweets stuff that is happening at an early stage that you'd never normally hear about. Of course sometimes that will be stuff that doesn't go anywhere that perhaps the club want to deny even if there is some truth behind it. And of course he may get tips from agents that are wrong where he is being used to engineer moves. He may just make it up as well, but for me there is enough evidence to suggest not. And I'd like to think I'm cynical enough and analytical enough to spot that!
Re: Abdoulaye's going t'Souk transfer thread
either way - I don't really understand why it is that folk seem always to get so agitated by it...
there's precious little Bolton tittle-tattle as it is - without Nixon, there'd be even less and what would we have to talk about or dismiss then??

As I've said before he's a national journalist interested in the championship and predominantly the smaller north west clubs.thebish wrote:either way - I don't really understand why it is that folk seem always to get so agitated by it...

Probably the only one. As you say he is probably the only gossip link we've got given the BN seem to always be three days behind!

... wow. Just caight up with two days of transfer gossip (^ up there)
I've learnt:
I need an abacus when discussing Dougie's quotes.
We no longer live in the 80s (or 70s).
We've signed Dean Windass (whoever he is).
and we've signed Stacey Murray (whoever he is).
And LK has got a mate down the pub who's called Nostradamus.
But where are the three strikers I was promised?

I'm not sure anyone would claim he makes stuff up (well, some might, but, you know...)BWFC_Insane wrote: I mean nobody would suggest he is 100% accurate. Not even our local paper is 100% accurate and they supposedly only print when things are confirmed by the club.

However, I don't think it's controversial to say that his access to inside information from the club is less than it once was, and he has to rely more on other contacts.
I don't think it's unreasonable to speculate that he may have better contacts regarding the club than other journos - partly down to his previous insider contacts...
However, as you point out, he's still going to be fed nonsense by agents trying to drum up interest in their clients. He knows this, and part of his job is to filter it. However, it's possibly also worth bearing in mind that he may not sift it all, as printing some of it may be a price he pays for the genuine scoops...

Lots of things help the summer pass. Discussing how accurate Nixon is these days, for one.thebish wrote:

Drinking boot polish from a tin, for another.
Hey-ho. Funny old world.

1. just makes stuff up
2. operates with such vague hints that anything that happens he can then claim he was talking about
or
3. both
people have been known to claim that nixon has no more knowledge than anyone making wild, drunken guesses in the dark...
which is what BWFCi responds to - and it all kicks off every three months or so...
and it's all very exciting (not).

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.
