aye - first over was a double wicket maiden... (which is quite valuable in T20!)

30 sixes in one go. That's mighty impressive, nearly a season's worth in my book! :D

i think it will help are performance in the 50 over world cup but prefer 40 over cricket. i think more 20-20s is a bad idea people do not care half as much as they usedto about 20 20 and more games is going to make the attendances even lower, i do how ever feel it was a good idea to have these 20-20s on a friday night however as people do not notice that they are watching something more like baseball then cricket after a few drinks.

Not a bad recovery - Australia v South Africa, 1st test.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket ... efault.stm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's a shame that a whole day was lost to bad weather.

I saw a bit of the Australian first innings when they lost three wickets in quick succession and thought that the South Africans had them worked out. When Clarke, the captain, came in to partner the surviving opener (Ed Cowan) things settled down a bit. Having missed entirely the third day's play I was quite surprised this morning to read that Australia had overtaken the S.A. first innings total for the loss of just one additional wicket.

It'll be interesting to see what the Australians can do in the first session today and whether Clarke will have the opportunity to declare and put a bit of pressure on the South African batsmen.

IMO and this is not an insult to your country if you win this series and go top of the rankings you will be the worst side to have gone top of those rankings, i dop not ewven know four of the players you played and clarke is the only world class player in that team. do not take that personally it is just my opinion

Ah, come on, Dan, statistics don't lie do they?

I think Quiney is the only player who is partaking of his first cap experience. Wade seems to have taken Haddin's place as first preference 'keeper. Lyon is a spinner who is perhaps the best of a mediocre list of possibilities. The rest are hardly journeymen. Ponting's a batsman who, once settled, can contribute runs (although he's at that point in his career where early dismissal seems to more the norm than the exception - but he's always been a bit suspect early on.) Hussey, as he proved yesterday, is still capable. Hilfenhaus, Siddle and Pattinson are more than capable bowlers although not as yet a match for Trueman and Statham or Lillee and Thomson.

Dan, as you are no doubt well aware, Australia is going through a 're-building' period. To an extent all sides are at all times, but in those cases the changes are gradual. I will admit that in this case Australia's rebuilding has taken longer than I anticipated. Ponting and Mike Hussey will, undoubtedly, either retire or be dropped in the next year or two. Another couple of experienced players to be replaced by tyros.

Yes, the constant flux of cricketers and teams is what keeps test cricket alive. May it long continue.

I was told you were in a rebuilding stage in 2009 by one of your lot during the ashes but the team you had then would destroy the lot you have got now.
this is my run down on the players you have out there. please change where appropiate with your opinions
Clarke: one of the best around
Watson: one day specialist who has put weak test series performances behind him in the past 6 months
beer : sh**
copeland : who
cummings: youngster who will not be there for some time
haddin : your best kepper why is he not playing, is it because he is now sh**
harris: fast but inaccurate, just short of a test player
hughes : good player but would struggle to get a place in an england or S.A side
hussey: good but not world class and is on poor form
johnson : your best fast bowler why is he not playing ?
khawaja: never has nor will be a test player
lyon : sh** , just an aussie answer to yardy
pointing : not as good as he was but still a good player
siddle: solid fast bowler but wold not open an england bowling attack
warner : one day player says it all
marsh: one day player

This is the side the selectors put out for the first test against South Africa, Dan:

Hilfenhaus
Pattinson
Siddle
Lyon
Quiney
Cowan
Warner
Ponting
Clarke
M Hussey
Wade

Hussey made a century. Warner failed and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Watson turns up as a replacement in Adelaide (he's been out with injury). Why Wade for Haddin? I'm not really sure, but it's possible that it was thought that he was in better form with the bat rather than a better 'keeper (Haddin has scored a heavy hundred and somewhere in the 'nineties' in the first couple of games for NSW this season, so I really don't know). Lyon - well I did say that he was the best of a mediocre bunch (he's no Shane Warne in the making). Phillip Hughes? He's struggling to get a spot in the Australian side (he hasn't played a test since about this time last year) although he did play for Australia A against the S.A. side in a warm up game - he didn't do very well. Mitch Johnson has been playing for WA in their games this season and his results have been pretty ordinary. He does have a wrist or arm problem of some kind or other (I am unaware of the details) so it's possible that is why he's not appeared on test side team sheets of late.

Captains: In my opinion Ponting did the right thing in relinquishing the captaincy to Clarke before considering retirement. Clarke has now had the advantage of controlling his team with his ex-captain still available as an on field mentor. That move was not only beneficial for the team, in the sense of a seamless transition, but it has probably extended Ponting's career for a while. I think though that 'while' is approaching its use by date. Nevertheless Clarke has matured over the last few years and has put his off-ground troubles behind him. I can't speak for the pavilion but he looks like a very good captain in the making.

It's unlikely that Australia will win this three test series against South Africa. They will have to win the remaining two tests (or one and a draw) to claim test cricket's number one ranking. In my opinion it won't happen. When it comes to the next Ashes series it's anyone's guess; yours will be as good as mine. England can field a very good team at the moment, there is no doubt whatsoever about that, whereas Australia seems still to be searching for that elusive combination of skill and resolve.

Waffle over.
