But this is proper genuine poorliness. Not bloke illness. I'm not feeling overwhelmed by your love, tea and sympathy yet. Where's the offer to come nurse my fevered brow?thebish wrote:ha! i hope you will now be taking back all the guff you have ever spouted about "manflu"!! lightweight!!Gooner Girl wrote:Cancelled run tonight. Now is it a euphemism?
In a world that has decided
That it's going to lose its mind
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind.

Re: The athletics/running thread
GG you should never run with a cold. It makes things far worse and can put an unnecessary strain on your heart and lungs. Save it for another day.
Last night was another tempo run. 8.2 miles with a three mile 'effort'. Average 7.30 pace overall.
And I have entered my first half-ironman race in August in Budapest.

Don't worry, I didn't. Suddenly felt much worse and kids are also poorly and waking at night so I'm suddenly shattered too, after all my energy at the beginning of the week.Gary the Enfield wrote:GG you should never run with a cold. So remind me what exactly a half ironman involves again?

It's a 1.2 mile swim in a lake off the River Danube, a 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run. It's a bit scary seeing it written down.

Actually the bike's the easy bit. Although sitting on a razor blade wide saddle can be a little....... chafing. My worst discipline is the swim. As the water will be 20 degrees I won't be allowed to wear my wetsuit so my buoyancy will be massively reduced. The run will sort itself out. Not worried about that.

Well you know a qualified swim teacher to pm if you need any help with that.Gary the Enfield wrote:Gooner Girl wrote:Blimey.Gary the Enfield wrote:Gooner Girl wrote:Don't worry, I didn't. And ouch re the chafing!

That is an impressive statement. I'm jealous. I know you've not done it yet but I'm sure you will.Gary the Enfield wrote:And I have entered my first half-ironman race in August in Budapest.
I should take up swimming and cycling given my issue. Probelm is I have no natural coordination, no shoulders and a concave chest, so flailing about in water is not a strong point!
Always wanted to go to Budapest.

Re: The athletics/running thread
You do know you don't have to do a half ironman to visit Budapest?!

Good point. I'm off!Gooner Girl wrote:You do know you don't have to do a half ironman to visit Budapest?!
Been talking with running mates about doing races in interesting locations that's all, GtE's got it nailed with that plan.
Should probably get to the point where I can complete Bolton parkrun painfree first though, osteo at 4.30 today for starters.

Mate it's part of the ramp up to full Ironman in 2015. Fortunately I appear to have picked one of the flattest courses in the Ironman calendar.

I would heartily recommend cross training, if only to strengthen the core. As a runner I do little upper body work and the swimming helps balance that out. I also find I run better off the bike (although 56 miles may be the exception that proves THAT rule)
GG, thanks for the offer on tips. You're a little too far for me to come for a dip, though.
And Pru? That's ALSO not a euphemism!
The city looks beautiful. We fly out two days before the race and then I have another 5 days after to enjoy the sites. Taking Mrs. GtE and young GtE too.

It's a fantastic and fascinating city, though the nightlife is ruined now somewhat by legions of British stag parties.LeverEnd wrote: Always wanted to go to Budapest.
