Each one left to join Chelsea, as did Tal Ben Haim.

Hurts to think that they signed all four of them for about the same amount that they coughed up for Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Dietmar Hamann, I just would have been interested to see how he would have worked out for us

I think he scored from the half-way line for Brescia didn't he?

During the World Cup he seemed to be thinking 'What the hell am I doing playing with these nuggets?'

We should of signed him.
Doubt it. They had a bloody good side including Stoichkov, that reached the semis and knocked the Krauts out on the way.

I doubt it. Hagi is Romanian, Stoichkov is Bulgarian.

Whoops. One too many wines. In that case apologies to Mr Coffey as he was most likely correct. *stops drinking and goes to bed*

I made a shout earlier in the thread for Hierro but now i've slept on it if there was one player I think that, had we kept him long term with the club, would have dramatically changed our long term fortunes and where we are today...

...it would have to be Daniel Sturridge. Had we managed to get the lad on a permanent deal last summer there's no way I believe we would have got relegated, heck no way we'd even have been in the bottom 5.

Aye... though he only had to beat Aidan Davidson...

Didn't he get a hat-trick? Was basically 11 vs Hagi...
3-3, I believe, pretty sure hagi got a hattrick, easily the best opposition player I ever saw play at burnden park...

Jon Walters, so we wouldn't have been relegated by the rugby league side he currently plays for.

:D I did! I remember telling my mate once that we had found a centre half that we'd build a team around. Not sure whatever happened to Greg Strong :?

Andy Dibble turned up like a breath of fresh air and I was sad to see him go but his career afterwards suggested we didn't miss much. Nobody mentioned Otsemebor - the bloke who Aldridge said we ruined :whack:

:D Aye, Jason Lydiate was bound to be class because he'd come from Man U, said I at the time.

I remember Dibble's first game as clear as a bell. 3-0 v West Brom. Keeper's catching crosses on the penalty spot was the sort of stuff I'd only ever seen before on TV.

Did Aldridge really say that about us and Ostemebor? What an absolute bell-end. I remember him in the half a game he played for us (against Newcastle?). I thought that he must've still had that bullet in his arse. The Queen Mary turned quicker.

Jon Newsome. Great loan signing along with Paul Warhurst and they formed a very good central defensive partnership.

Struggling to recall why we didn't sign him, problems over the transfer fee I think it was?

Think you're on the right lines. Didn't we sign Hendry at a similar point?

Surprised nobody has mentioned Claus Jensen yet, he had a cracking amount of ability but seemed another one that would only really 'fit' at Bolton. Same could be said of Frandsen as well really (yes, watching the Denmark game at the minute has reminded me).

Plaayer-Manager at Rhyl, currently. Honest, that is a level I attained !!

I just looked him up & he only played 12 times for us. 16 other clubs ... a good few on loan.

Jason Lydiate. Now there's a name. I'm not sure if we ever won when he played. Was signed off us by Sam Allerdyce for Blackpool. Currently coach at Rochdale.

I have to empathise with the suggestion of Sturrdge. It was never going to happen, but my goodness he was good with us .... yet Chelsea seem reluctant to use him & howe on God's Earth Wellbeck is ahead of him in the pecking order only Hodgson knows.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Yeah, I think we signed Hendry because we couldn't get Newsome, although the years don't quite match according to Wiki. Might have been the season after.

Surprised Hendy only played 25 games for us. He could fall into this category, although I think he was getting on a bit. He was great for the promotion season.

Robert Fleck - transfer fee to high and he didn't want to come once his loan finished
