you could take off Cleo Laine (though I did once have a great album of Cleo and dudley moore - him on t'piano, of course..) and replace her with Billie Holliday... (and you forgot Sarah Vaughan)

(Pearl Bailey was more broadway than jazz wasn't she? - do you mean Mildred Bailey? - she was a proper jazz singer)

Phil
Nope, Pearl Bailey, although she had a wide range of talents. Love Sarah Vaughan but consider her more mainstream than jazz. (mainstream meaning blues, big band stuff etc. Billie Holliday, yes. All great singers and you could add Ella in the jazz stakes. Some of my favourite stuff is Ella with George Shearing's quintet. Seen Cleo Laine live two or three times with Dankworth. Terrific lady and regarded by many jazz people as one of the finest skat singers ever. There are literally dozens of top class female jazz singers from the forties onwards.

I'd like to hear how you define it Commie since it's an integral part of jazz.

Suffice to say, Queen Ella is regarded as the ultimate master (or mistress if you want to go pc) of skat singing. That's good enough for me.

To get back on scat-track: Ella and Louis (some say Armstrong invented it about 1926) basically using the human voice to imitate instruments in jazz fill ins.

You lot leave Cleo alone. She has a great voice - or did, I haven't heard anything of her recent work if there is any. I have a couple of her albums in my collection (I think they are both with her husband - Dankworth).

Dudley Moore was quite an accomplished pianist (or do musicians these days prefer 'piano player'?). Yes I have an album of his too and still enjoy dragging it onto the turntable from time to time.

As far as descriptions go, I can't really see a problem with using skin colour as an identifier. It's no different from using 'red head' or 'blue eyes' in my opinion. Surely it's not unusual to hear the description 'olive skinned'? That's not racist or derogatory.

It has been said before but I'll repeat it anyway; it's not the words it's the context and intent that matter. I might add, though, that it's not unusual to hear Australian Aborigines refer to themselves as 'black fellas' and non-aborigines (Europeans) as 'white fellas'. No one blinks an eye. Should I choose to do the same I suspect that I would be castigated and hounded from pillar to post by those who think such useage is patronising.

some bird at work yesterday asked me if my hair was this colour because I eat so many curries for my lunch. Told her that if she'd had said a similar thing to an asian person she would a) not have teeth, b) not have a job or c) both

so how come hair colour's different? how come that can get flaunted around. don't get me wrong the whole office called her a bint and she hasn't said a peep since and feck me I've heard worse

Hair colour isn't different. I'm sure you could have had her reprimanded had you been sufficiently offended enough to take the matter further.
