In Jewishland they offer pressed, cured, smoked turkey breast in thin slices as a bacon substitute. The more savvy there use this as an excuse to eat the real thing surreptitiously.

Quite ... it does for those who can't eat bacon ... or as cover for those who wish not to be seen as eating bacon.

In Arabland we have a veritable choice when it comes to bacon. You have the turkey option already mentioned, there is a veal option and a beef version. The veal and beef versions are far preferable to the turkey option (it resembles spam in rasher form), though neither really cuts it. You're then left with an expensive trip to the special pork room in Waitrose. Here you have the special privilege to spend 7 quid on cheapo bacon. My preferred option is the 16 quid a kilo pork loin and then I cure it myself.

Your American bacon is cardboard and isn't bacon. Your Canadianshire version is not proper bacon either, but beats the American stuff. I will be eating bacon every day during my brief jaunt to Blighty this weekend

I'm not altogether sure what you are on about but your preferred option sounds a bit like Canadian bacon.

The Canadian Bacon story
Around the turn of the last century (or as they say, "during the war years"), England had a pork shortage. They imported side bacon from Canada, smoked it and termed it "Wiltshire Sides" in England. Due to this event Canadian bacon was made famous. Over time the United States believed that Canadian bacon was smoked back bacon although true Canadian bacon is not smoked. Our Canadian product is classified by the USDA as uncooked Canadian bacon and is Canadian #1 peameal back bacon.

During the war years, yellow peas were ground up into meal. Canadian bacon was rolled in this meal. This ensured better curing, shelf life and avoided bacterial problems. Over the years, this tradition was changed to cornmeal, due to the availability of corn.

What are Pork Loins, Boneless Pork Back and Pork Tenderloin?
Pork Loin is made up of two types of meat with a bone stuck in the middle (think of the last time you had a pork chop). The top piece (larger of the two) is Boneless Pork Back (what peameal bacon - REAL Canadian Bacon is made from, sometimes referred to as Back Bacon in Canada). The lower piece is the Pork Tenderloin.

another gig last night. bit of a bear pit of a crowd, so didn't go as well as other times, but it was still relatively ok. You need nights like that though, lets you realise what stuff really works, and what stuff other crowds laugh at just for the sake of politeness.

And it was all recorded, so hopefully will pop up a video to scrutinise in due course.

Problem is it all takes place in the pub, so by the end of the night im plastered.

I'm surprised your parents even tried, Beefheart. My children (they are adults these days) are both using Facebook but their social lives have nothing to do with me so I've steered clear of sticking in my probably unwelcome nose. It's undoubtedly different if children are minors, however that is one bridge I didn't need to cross.
