That quote makes you wonder about the whole article.

Coyle has "mentioned him" as being "one of 20 players we're monitoring" and the "sounding out" was a call to their chief exec Keith Lamb to say "we're looking at him but no definite bid" to clear up the stories in the tabloids!

This is like the famous Cleese/Barker/Corbett sketch on class: "I look up to him because...". The vast majority of names mentioned on here (and the who-would-you-want thread) are derided for either being too down-market ("A Championship striker?!") or too up-market ("We'll never afford him!"). Even if someone's mentioned who might be attainable - say, for argument's sake, Reo-Coker - there's always some other reason to nay-say.

Fact is, we've no idea. Old examples I know but who'd have thought we'd sign Okocha or Djorkaeff? How many of us punched the air when we gave a trial - a trial, mind - to the apparently overweight and certainly unwanted Kevin Davies?

Interestingly enough, having seen said trial, I did indeed utter the phrase "looks like Sams done it again".

Jaaskelainen has been reinstated for the home clash with Sunderland on Saturday, but there will be no assurances for the veteran next season. The Finn, who has played more than 500 games in 14 years with the Trotters, was rested for last weekend's 1-0 defeat by Blackburn when Adam Bogdan stepped up.

But Al-Habsi's return from an impressive season-long loan at Wigan is going to be a greater challenge to the 36-year-old. However, Coyle insists the situation does not present him with a problem and vowed it would be a "fair fight" between the trio. The Scot said: "Ali was allowed to go on loan to Wigan because I felt he'd been understudy for too long and he had to play.

"I knew the qualities he has as a goalkeeper, I also knew young Adam Bogdan is an outstanding keeper who's getting better. So for us it was always a win, win, win situation.

"When the season finishes at Wigan, and Al Habsi's been one of their best players this year, he'll return to Bolton Wanderers, and that's very clear. "There's no problem regarding all the positions in our team. It's a fair fight. As a manager, I think the best one will play in that position."

As the Premier League season draws to a close in England with Liverpool set to go on something of a spending spree in the coming preseason the rumours surrounding players linked with the Merseyside club have cranked up a notch over the past couple of weeks.

It has culminated recently in one club "insider" claiming that the Reds will be the club to snap up Bolton Wanderers centre back Gary Cahill in what would likely be one of the biggest English transfers of the summer.

A contributor to the popular statistical website Anfield Index has fueled the talk after listing several players who Liverpool's Director of Football, Damien Comolli, and current caretaker manager Kenny Dalglish were looking at with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Further to the deal to take the three-time England cap defender Cahill to Anfield is the season-long loan deal which would see Reds' midfielder Jonjo Shelvey join the Reebok Stadium outfit, where he would link up with Trotters' boss Owen Coyle—like Dalglish, a Glaswegian.

Coyle has garnered a reputation of developing strong English talent over the past couple of seasons after the successful loan spells of Jack Wilshere and, currently, Daniel Sturridge.

Shelvey has featured 18 times for Liverpool this season since joining from Charlton Athletic last summer in what was one of the last transfers sanctioned by then-boss Rafa Benitez.

Further, a season-long loan deal could prove to be a big stepping stone for a young midfielder who is still finding his feet in England's top division—Shelvey has featured 12 times from the bench in the Premiership but has yet to be named in the starting eleven.

Cahill, on the other hand, has played over 100 times for Bolton since moving to them from Aston Villa, the club where he started his career, and has matured into one of the finest home-grown defenders in the country.

At 25 years old this summer could be a defining one in his career and Coyle has openly admitted that the club could not stand in his way if a big team comes in with an offer—though Cahill is expected to fetch a large fee in the region of £15 million.

Whether or not the story pans out in the manner portrayed remains to be seen; two things which are certain though is that a loan move to a club such as Bolton could do Shelvey the world of good.

In the long run he will battle to gain a place in the Liverpool first team—his two most recent sub appearances have come at left-back. Moreover, Gary Cahill is sure to be a wanted man this summer, with the likes of Arsenal also expected to be in the running for him should he move on.
