Both veer towards the extreme edges of the whole sorry mess, and neither is really worthy of much newsprint, I fear. The comparison with Barton in the latter, being a particular nadir.

Precisely. Let the legal process take its course and we'll see where it all comes out in the end.

He's pleaded 'not guilty' today at the Magistrates court. Where does that go from here then?

Except he hasn't. He didn't enter a plea today, as is the case with most first hearings.

LIVERPOOL FC captain Steven Gerrard appeared in court today charged with assaulting a dad-of-two at a Southport bar. The 28-year-old did not enter a plea during the short hearing at North Sefton Magistrates Court, in Southport.

Dressed in a grey suit, white shirt and dark tie the Reds’ skipper was the first to take his place on the wooden benches in the secure dock in court number 2. As he sat waiting for his co-accused to join him he glanced upwards to the media sitting high up in the court gallery.

Gerrard is accused of assaulting local businessman Marcus McGee, 34, at The Lounge Inn in the early hours of December 29. He was left with bruises and a missing tooth after allegedly being punched in the face.

The footballer and dad-of-two, who also faces an affray charge, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, address before the charges were read out to him.

When asked if he understood the charges Gerrard said yes.

Aye. He said he is going to plead not guilty at the proper bad boys court.

Without wanting to judge too much before the jury, with all the facts, make their decision, this video doesn't look too 'self defencey' to me. The fact the jury only need to believe he 'may' have acted in self defence, and the fact it's Steven Gerrard means he'll get off though.

But with all his 'mates' pleading guilty it leaves him a man alone.

Just watched the story on ITV News at Ten (I know!). The item followed on from the sad story of the young squaddie from Manchester who got killed in Afghanistan on Sunday morning.

The lead into the Stevie Me story ran along the lines of "And now the alleged assault by England football hero Steven Gerrard." Which has to be a bit crass, in the circumstances.

Quite. The fact he, not the dead soldier is the lead story is an understandable yet wholly depressing thing in itself.

Except he wasn't, because as Zulus said the Stevie G item followed on from the squaddie in Afghanistan.

Having seen the video, I can't really understand how it can be considered self defence. Even if the victim did say something remotely out of turn, it was Stevie Me who took it upon himself to go over and have a word. As an article pointed out this morning, he's just not used to someone saying "no" to him.

Having seen the video, I've not seen any of this 'barrage of upper-cut punches delivered with the skill of a professional boxer' as the prosecution alleges. All you can see is someone, who I'm not sure is even Gerrard, punching the fella in the face.

The testimony of other people is that one of Gerrard's friends (John Doran) threw the first punch, and that Gerrard came in after - none of which is shown on CCTV.

On the video here - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/mers ... 162869.stm - you see Gerrard behind the bar (around 20 seconds in) in a grey/dark jumper with a white collar shirt underneath. The guy who gets punched at the far end of the bar (around 40 seconds) is wearing something similar, and the guy who hits him appears to be wearing just a light coloured shirt.

Haven't seen anything even bordering on 'conclusive' that Gerrard even hit anyone.

Feel free to show me any more CCTV footage, but I can't see from that how you could conclusively say that Gerrard hit him. The guy who strikes appears to be wearing different clothes, and the footage is fairly iffy, and the scuffle happens a good distance from the camera.

I'm not saying he didn't do it, I'm saying that the CCTV released doesn't show him doing it.
