They can't work on set pieces. Can't. Poor Miyachi. I don't know if Feyenoord are any good at set pieces, but if they're not, only place he's likely to have ever practised them is at school! Arsenal to here.

Moo and Ricketts, good leap by drogba but surely if you know you cant outjump your man you make it hard for them to jump. Even the Norwich midgets managed to do that against us the other week.officer_dibble wrote:motd

ryo stood wrong side of post!
wtf?
Re: Corners
But the man on the post has to defend better, Stellios saved us many times when standing in that position, Ryo needs some coaching in what to do.Ianmooreslovechild wrote:Moo and Ricketts, good leap by drogba but surely if you know you cant outjump your man you make it hard for them to jump. But time and time again we let in goals from corners, probably more than all the rest of the league put together. Can't believe that we practice defending them, but then again we can't score from corenerd ourselves so it must be easy for our defenders to stop our forwards from scoring in training.
The team is a complete shower at present.

At least we're not worse than Villa.
I bunged them into a spreadsheet and came up with this table. Doesn't include this weeks games.

I looked at the attacking stats too, there is a stand out team at the top of both tables. West Brom!

Is it a coincidence that a team like West Brom are near the top of both these tables? Hodgson strikes me as a manager that works on this sort of stuff. Obviously I'm not sure the stats are really valid with this amount of data but I think there are some correlations there. Arsenal, Bolton and Villa are one of the worst at scoring and conceding from corners while teams like Norwich, West and Man City are good at both.
Even Wolves are better than average at both, they must be working on this while we're not.
I'd love to see what these stats were like under Allardyce, if anyone can find the number of goals scored from corners stat like the one in the article I can can easily bung them into the data I have.

Re: Corners
Yes Ryo should have cleared it but the thing is just about every week we conceed or nearly conceed from a corner. It's not as though we hav e a team of dwarves or not enough back.Infact having at least one man forward would help take some pressure off(Ryo or Mavis perhaps)These are experienced defenders who either lose their man or manage to get in a position where they cannot attack the ball.Whether its lack of mental strength, poor coaching or shear weight of pressure you cant really say.I'm not convinced it's about coaching. These are players who should already know how to defend a corner. It's not like they're a bunch of kids(Ryo excepted)FaninOz wrote:But the man on the post has to defend better, Stellios saved us many times when standing in that position, Ryo needs some coaching in what to do.Ianmooreslovechild wrote:Moo and Ricketts, good leap by drogba but surely if you know you cant outjump your man you make it hard for them to jump. Just having seen City's stats we'll get battered to hell next week like a cute college boy chucked in a US state lockup!

Of that there is absolutely no doubt.Chelsea was a possibility which is why the performance was frustrating. There seems to be no belief at all against the big clubs. That said had Luiz not got the break for his goal and we reached 70 mins at 0 0 we may well have come into it and got a surprise result.Hoboh wrote:Just having seen City's stats we'll get battered to hell next week like a cute college boy chucked in a US state lockup!

Re: Corners
I couldn't believe one of Tuncay's corners yesterday.
It bounced before the near post. I'll say that again. It bounced before the near post.
This is a player that has represented his country on numerous times and played in various European leagues. He gets paid thousands a week to perform what should be second nature, bread and butter to these kind of people, and he can't do it.
It's like a builder building a house and just leaving a big gap in the wall and sticking a big 'feck you' sign in there instead. Why should we accept this shit? He should be docked wages and given extra training.

Re: Corners
Yes that was shocking but then the delivery on all our set plays was awful regardless of who took it. turns out Petrov is the only player in the squad capable of striking a dead ball effectively. Oh dearGail Platz wrote:I couldn't believe one of Tuncay's corners yesterday.

Re: Corners
Well with no Petrov on the pitch it seemed like no-one knew who was supposed to be taking set pieces, I remember one free kick we got and it took about a minute before Ricketts made his way over to take it (only to not even beat the first man).

You can't have been watching the first half against Wigan. Don't think Petrov got one fecking corner past the first man.Ianmooreslovechild wrote:Yes that was shocking but then the delivery on all our set plays was awful regardless of who took it. turns out Petrov is the only player in the squad capable of striking a dead ball effectively. Re: Corners
We have gone from one extreme to the other with corners. Under Megson I don't think we did anything else but practice corners and set pieces. Under Coyle I have serious doubts that we do anything on set pieces either defensively or attacking sense.

Re: Corners
Just kick the ball toward the space ahead of Miyaichi and he will get a lot of corners for us(that is one of the ways to make the most of amazingly quick wingers like him). For the teams like us, corner kicks are very important opportunities to score, especially when playing against stronger teams like Manchester City. We have to defend hard throughout the game, and try to score from only a few opportunities including corners this weekend(against Manchester City).

Re: Corners
If ever stats highlight where our manager and coaches are failing.
Can't defend set pieces, can't attack from them.
Thats little to do with quality of players and EVERYTHING to do with the quality of coaching and organisation.
At Bolton you have to be good at set pieces both ends of the pitch. Its crucial. And as pointed out, someone like Hodgson knows this and blatantly works on it.

Re: Corners
Being good at both aspects of set-pieces used to pick us up about 12 points a season.
They are so feckin' vital in the game that it's embarassing that we don't take them seriously. They're costing us so often.

Re: Corners
Indeed. And I'm astonished at how static our players are when attacking them. We NEVER have players attacking them from a running start. Always just trying to get something on them from standing still.
If we put another couple of bodies in the box to get in the way of players trying to mark, some of our lads might actually be able to attack one unchallenged like what happens at our end. Or is that 'not very nice'

Yep. They "scored" from their second corner; we'd had (I think) seven at that point and hardly got the ball into the box. Fecking shite.
