It was a hard race even though only it was only 5km.

well done hun - you didn't expect it to be easy - so i don't know why you are so disappointed when you discover it isn't!!! for someone used to track and road running - x-country is always gonna be a bit of a learning curve... and you THOUGHT you'd be last!!!

Not even if you wore Kylie's Hotpants! (well I might if you did but what are the chances of that happening)

Just come across this awesome website: http://www.parkrun.org.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
basically timed 5km runs across the country, ran for free. Gonna do the Hackney Marshes one this Saturday morning
and see how unfit I've actually become
gonna aim for 25mins and work my way down from there...maybe catching you up at one point gary :p

There's one at Grovelands Park in Enfield. Some of our guys are doing this and then coming up to the clubhouse afterwards. It's a two lap flat(tish) course. I may give it a go for a change.

Re: The athletics/running thread
I worked it out today - slightly depressing outcome..
at my current pace, 5km would take me 32min..
GtE would be home, showered, breakfasted and powering up the console for a game of Air Guitar Heroes before I staggered home!

Is that flat or over hills?
Recent race I was in (3 and a half mile fell race) 32 mins dead would have put you here
1 22:03 KW
2 22:19 CD
3 23:01 RM
4 23:57 PH
5 24:08 CH
6 25:02 TC
7 25:10 FC
8 25:38 LB
9 25:49 LE
10 28:05 RB
11 28:36 DP
12 28:59 HH
13 29:49 JH
14 30:54 SW
15 31:09 GH
16 31:42 DR
17 32:06 JH
18 32:40 RH
19 34:07 EE
20 34:08 EG
21 34:20 KA
22 34:20 MS
23 35:10 AG
24 36:29 DC
25 40:17 BQ
Nothing wrong with that. Not fast, but not last either.
Re: The athletics/running thread
No shame in that. At all. Plenty of people can't even manage 5km. I know I couldn't six years ago.thebish wrote:I worked it out today - slightly depressing outcome..

Anyway, pace is the last thing to worry about when starting off...it's getting the miles in the legs to build them up. If you start off haring around straight away you'll more than likely do more harm than good. Get the distance covered then the times will tumble as you adjust.
4.6km run yesterday and i got about 24 minutes, roughly. Hence the 25min aim. My flatmate is in South London Orienteering Club (been meaning to go myself tbh) and some of his clubmates have personal bests of under 20mins

Re: The athletics/running thread
thanks Axman - this was flat and on a road!
cheers Verbal - that's exactly what Laura told me today - speed is irrelevant (she said) - you need to build up the miles in your legs... and keep going!

Re: The athletics/running thread
Exactly
when I was training for my first half-marathon I was just happy to get to the mark and get over the finish line in (i think) about 2hrs and 3 minutes. A year later I'd knocked 15minutes off that. It's a good bug to catch though

I'm still running in my cycling gear - the figure-hugging lycra bottoms have padding (for sitting on a hard saddle) - which people don't see if you are on a bicycle - BUT - if you are running, then I can only imagine it looks like I am running whilst wearing some kind of incontinence pad...

Re: The athletics/running thread
You have normal shorts! Wear them! Or pick up a proper pair from a sports shop cheap. Don't need to be fancy, but c'mon! Padded ones like that won't be helping your cause!thebish wrote:just to give you a mental picture...Gooner Girl wrote:You're such a thoughtful and kind hearted friend...thebish wrote:yeah - I ran slowly on purpose just to make you feel better!Gooner Girl wrote:Never mind Bish, console yourself with the thought that you have made me happy that i'm actually faster then someone!
