Finally caught up with Slumdog Millionaire last night. A little contrived and over-praised but still enjoyable, and extremely well-filmed, one of the best filmic depictions of a city I've seen.

Aye, watched it on Sunday. Very colourful, which with my 0.1second attention span was always going to leave a good impression :) a few holes in the story along the way but very beautifully told. Reminded me of TUS in the way the police were interviewing him and the flashbacks.

Watched a film i might quite possibly be the only person on this board to EVER see. When in Paris and hoping to see a French film both to have a good time and to improve your command of the language, don't let a bunch of giddy girls pick the film. We went to see a French Rom-Com called 'Lol', which turned out to be French Skins, but less well written. The film did have one hilariously redeeming part though. The kids went on a school trip to England and it was the most fantastically French view of the English ever. They had the kids being served pasta on bread by a woman who's 10-ish daughter was blond and wearing a tiara, and named Diana.

I don't think you'd enjoy Benjamin Button.

Can't decide whether I like the look of that or not....it seems to have a similar feel to Ma Vie en Rose.

Question Time.

It feels like '97 all over again, as yet another poor government metaphorically squirms.

And of course Kelvin Mackenzie is still a brain-dead waste of air.

Had a second helping of Liam Neeson's "Taken" tonight. "I promise you, I will come after you, I will find you, and when I do, I will kill you". Not a man to mess with.

I've been to the pictures to watch Scumbag Millionaire. To be honest, I thought that it was dreadfully contrived rubbish by enlarge. Maybe I'd heard and read too much good about it. :(

That's incredibly harsh, though I too feel the hype is OTT.

You didn't like any of it? Not even the cinematography? i thought its portrayal of the city was sometimes just outstanding... the junk river, the alleys, the filth, the half-lives...

The story of the street kids didn't move you? not even the acid in the eyes? [noting that there is evidence that this happens in reality]. Hope that's not overstepping the spoiler line...

The snobbery and put downs of the 'slumdog' by the compere didn't ring a note of truth about that caste and class-divided world?

You couldn't find yourself empathising with the hero?

It's a bombay fairytale, obviously, and full of holes, but I've seen far, far worse...

Indeed, starting with Crash!

Bruce, I, perhaps more than anybody, tend to react badly to things I consider to be overrated.

Perhaps I was fortunate in somehow missing the Slumdog hype before I saw it, because that meant I took it for what it was - a well shot, entertaining film, that gave a real sense of its exotic location.

I think the central love story is very hollow and contrived, but I enjoyed the rest of the film. I quite like the idea of flashing back to the different points in somebody's life when they acquired these certain nuggets of knowledge....

LOL... Top marks for persistence on the slight difference of opinion on Crash...

In many ways, interestingly, i feel that slumdog and crash have real similarities... both come from the very liberal edge of mainstream movie sensibilities... both have a very evident schematic structure which gives the movies an element of predictability... both are episodic in their story telling... both are liked by me...

So i reckon you're the wierd one here...

The way in which the life-event answers to the questions were in matching chronological order basically de-bunked it for me.
