sounds like a fuel-pump issue or a blocked/knackered catalytic converter (haven't you had CAT problems before with your plumes of smoke??)

(also - make sure nobody has shoved a potato up your exhaust!)

Can't remember if last time it was the CAT or the turbo. It goes into this 'mode' whereby you can't take it above 2000 revs when you've broke something. Definitely no spuddage though

UPDATE: A light's come on now to reveal that I apparently have a 'Fault in the Diesel Particulate Filter' WTFF?

it's the gadget that filters the black soot from your exhaust... when blocked - acts a bit like a potato stuffed up your exhaust (hence my question!)

Soot builds up in your exhaust and the car then dumps fuel into it to get it hot and burn it off. This usually happens when you are doing a decent speed ie on the motorway. If you have pottered around for ages then you may not have burnt it off. From the sounds of it you do plenty of mileage at reasonable speed so my bet would be a faulty sensor. You could try a reset as suggested above. Might be worth googling to see if other users of the same car have solved the problem easily.

What type of motor is it? If it's a recent diesel with common rail high pressure injection it could well need a good clean out to get rid of carbon deposits.
Trouble is some such engines have a tendency to dump fuel into the sump so it is worth checking that your engine oil level has not gone up 'cos in the long run this is NOT GOOD.
