Like everything else that is opinion based it's all subjective. As we can see on here all the time, no two folk see it the same.
So more useful than feck all but not much use really.

I think the record stands for itself. When a big club like Everton forge a link, it's not because it's not much use. The number of players FM has spotted before anyone else is astounding.

To give you an example, a few years ago, there was a young Italian lad who was highly rated. He'd never played in Serie A or for the Italian youth side and was 17/18. FM rated him highly and he's now a 20 year old sitting on a 5 year contract at PSG, the only club with spending power to rival City. Football Manager scouted him literally years before he was widely known and he's obviously a quality player.

There are many examples of this. Like I said, it doesn't always work out but there's a reason why clubs, managers and scouts all use FM as a tool to help them find good players.

Davies deal in doubt? Their manager seems to think so......

I think they have around 1000 scouts, so it's not 'just' a game. If I remember correctly, Everton signed a deal with Sports Interactive, who make FM, to have additional access to their scouting system.
Ok then. I'll play...

What does it say about Mark Davies then? You know, for a bit of a yard stick...
Davies is alright on FM. He does nothing exceptional but most of his stats are around 10-15. To give you a brief idea...

First touch: 15
Creativity: 16
Passing: 16
Technique: 15

Strength: 9
Jumping: 8
Heading: 5
Tackling: 11

I think he's rated about right. Nothing exceptional but good on the ball.
See, I'd give him decent marks for running with the ball. Maybe knock a few off for blind alleys mind  He most definitely wouldn't get 16 for creativity and tackling wouldn't get near 11, unless you mean 11 tackles in his whole career

All seems a bit arbitrary to me. Who awards these marks? How is it consistent as I assume it isn't one bloke dishing out the scores?
Fairly sure I recall Batty having input to ours, one season...

Olsson being offered around everywhere right now by agents. There is one club quite keen. In Mirror hopefully.

Of course there are examples, stat's will always throw up examples to support any argument if you look at them long enough.

For every one that supports a view, I wager there are a many that don't.

Of course. Even if a player is a brilliant dribbler or whatever when he's 16 or 17, that doesn't mean to say he'll be Messi-like when he's 25. Players stagnate and regress due for many reasons, maybe injuries, personal problems, lack of game time or whatever else. That's why a scouting system - whether it's FM or real life - will never be flawless. No matter how much potential a player shows, it doesn't mean they'll end up any good and when you look at players like Grant Holt, it shows the opposite can be true and that players who look limited at a low level can develop lots.

FM has been proving its record for years though, so it's more than a random system. It's not always perfect but it's a good basis to give you a general idea.

I prefer the TW rating system...

not picked by manager = ACE
sold to an allardyce club = ACE
not from the premiership = SHOITE
puts in a lot of effort = ACE
doesn't track back = SHOITE
bought by Coyle = SHOITE
in the ressies but only makes it to the bench = ACE
goalkeeper = SHOITE
left back who isn't Ricardo = SHOITE
