Setanta just took £9.99 off me - i forgot i subscribed!

Post by Westhoughton Dave » Thu Apr 24, 2008 10:14 pm

Before i panic anyone, its my own fault ok .. i subscribed to the £1 offer in December, and cutting a long story short, decided after realising there wasn't one single thing i had watched on ANY of the Setanta channels, to un-subscribe .. the only time i wanted to watch was when the Whites were playing .. trouble was i always ended up at work and unable to watch it..

they mentioned something about a £5 a month offer when i unsubscribed, i said no thanks, but i would think about it .. next thing i know £5 went out, long story short again, after another phone call i agreed to try it .. after only ever catching 15mins of Whites v Liverpool .. i gave up .. and totally forgot about it, until i saw the £9.99 go out, anyway i rang them and they wanted 30 days notice and for me to pay another £9.99 in a month for the privilege .. after 30 odd mins arguing on an 0871 number, i got that squashed, but probably cost me £6 for the phone call!..

So, Setanta .. is it actually worth it ..

Didn't Fatshaft have a long and vicariously entertaining argument with Sultana?

FWIW, Howfen Dave, at least you could watch the match next Saturday. But then, you might be there in person...

Just to re-iterate, I think its crap.

However, I'm self-flagelating by depriving myself of the IPL cricket, so expect a touch of hypocrisy this time next year when I sign up!

I nearly kept it for that .. but then again, the sky+ box is so full of shite that the family wants to watch i would never geta chance to watch it anyway, as there would be only me watching and i waould get bounced off the tv!

And as for the fatshaft who had a comment about them, i am fairly new to the forum and havent seen that one yet .. sorry!

Try the search function at the top, Dave - I believe you can search for Setanta in thread titles if you so choose.

Not worth it for me. Anything they show( excluding the IPL or golf) is readily available to be viewed online anyway so I don't see the point.

They are c*nts. Had to block my card from then in the end, although it meant I got two months free before they realised :pissed: Sadly, when they did realise it was 15 minutes before Aberdeen v Celtic that they cut me off

Erm, just read that thread FS, and have to say you were in the right.

Verbal contract is nearly as binding as written, I should know as I reclaimed £350 from O2 over mis-selling over the phone.

Companies like this require people to blindly accept their fate to make money - hence the '3 months free trial' offers and the like.

Feck 'em, don't give in 'til they tire of the sound of your voice and pay up.

They really are piss poor. I first fell out with them about four or five years ago when they first started up.

At that time they offered a season ticket for the SPL for £32, it was £8 per game PPV at the time. They also had a habit of showing only the OF games, whoever happened to be away from home that weekend, but they specified that they would show every live game that the BBC showed (it was where they took their feed from).

So upon calling them I asked specifically if this was the case, and they wouldn;t duck out the first time that one of the OF wasn't playing? "Nope it's every game that BBC shows, we follow their schedule exactly."

The first game comes around a few weeks later that doesn't feature either Rangers or Celtic; Aberdeen v Hearts or some such I think it was, Aberdeen involved anyway, and of course the screens are blank. I went :spank: :Jedi: :box: :whack:  at them.

I demanded a refund as I didn;t sign up to Old Firm TV, the supervisor tried to tell me that they had to stick to the terms of the contract, and that verbal promises made over the phone were non-binding. I informed the young lady, that when I sign up after having asked specifically about a service, I then expect that service to be the one provided.

After a few more minutes of :box: :spank: :box: :spank: I got my money back.

No more Setanta for me.

WOW!! Thanks for the link FS .. looks like i dodged a bullet

As i was 20mins into the queue i was just about to disconnect and try sending an email, but was delayed for a second, after which i was put through to someone ..

I didn't want to give you the whole story as i thought it might be boring .. and its nothing like as bad as FS's but here goes, i will try and make it concise..

I saw an offer in the paper, pay £1 connection fee and get 3 free months of Setanta .. i applied on-line, after about a month i realised i was watching nowt and a Bolton game was missed as i had to work.. .. i look again at the offer details and decided to call them (in the window for cancellations as stated in the T&C's off the offer) and say, i am not watching nowt, and th time i want to watch something i cant because of work ..

Now the line wasn't very clear and i had to ask him to repeat himself a couple of times, even ended up going to the bedroom upstairs to get some quiet and try to hear the call, he seemed to accept my cancellation but said something about if i come back in the next month or so, i could have it for £5 a month for three months

Now like FS i asked if i could come back at anytime and ask if i could just pay £9.99 for a months rental

he said no, every time i came back, i had to pay the £12.99 connection fee

He said .. theres more Bolton matches coming before the end of the season and would i like to try it, so i said, no thanks, but i will think about it and get back to him ..

Suffice to say, a few days later £2.42 went out of my account .. i thought, it was just to cover the cancellation time, then a month later £5 went out, i hadn't noticed that Setanta had gone from my system as i never went to those channels .. WTF? .. Rang Setanta, she said that i had agreed to the £5 a month for 3 months and all that stuff, i argued about it, she said all calls were recorded so if she wanted me to check then, blah blah blah .. after a chat she said theres more Bolton games to come and persuaded me to finish the 3 month thing .. and to ring up before 28th April to cancel so i wouldn't be charged for my 30 days notice ..

so 22nd April came and £9.99 went out .. this reminded me i had to cancel it, and i thought i was only paying £5 anyway ..

so i rang again, waiting the 20mins i mentioned above, and, cutting a 15min discussion short, i said i wanted to cancel, she said fine, but i would have to pay another £9.99 on th 14th of May before it was canceled on the 21st ..

?

?

Why ??

Well your billing date is on the 14th yadda yadda,

WHOA .. i was told to ring before the 28th so that i wouldn't be charged ..

bit of discussion followed to which i ended up saying, good luck getting the money as i have canceled the Direct Debit .. which i happened to have done on the on-line banking whilst talking to her, to which she said that thy will write to me and chase the £9.99

Red rag -- meet bull

i told her i was told i had paid in advance and again told her i had to cancel before the 28th and seemingly getting nowhere i asked for a supervisor .. a trick that seems to work in a lot of situations within call centers and gets me results ..

after a few mins on hold, she came back and said, i have spoken to my supervisor, and as a one off thing, we have accepted your cancellation and have dated it for 13th May, which is before my payment date, therefore i wont need to pay anything else ..

I calmly thanked her and said there was nothing more, wishing her goodbye i ended the call and vowed to myself never to buy Setanta again..

I wouldn't mind but i can say with all honesty, that the only time i have stopped to watch something on Setanta for more than a few seconds was th last 15mins of the Bolton Liverpool game, an that was only because i didn't even know it was on and caught it whilst surfing up the sky box, not a thing has been watched .. on any premium Setanta channel before or since ..

So my message, and i think fatshaft might agree with this .. Thinking of Setanta .. think again .. unless your getting it free as part of a Virgin TV pack.

I get it as part of my Virgin Pack, but apart from Bolton games I never watch it.

TBH, I'd rather have Sky One and Sky Sports News back..........

What he said. Or, for the sake of balance, any PVR, but you'll walk a mile or two before you find one as well designed for its content.

Sell-outs!

Murdoch is taking over the world with your money, your names are going in the little black book, and come the revolution(which isn't related to a Sky advert about HD), you'll be first against the wall.....

If anyone else comes along with a labour-saving, time-saving, effortlessly usable device which stops me having to wade through hours of chaff to get to the wheat, they can have my money. If I can afford it... which I don't have to with Sky. Rest easy, my Lord (wouldn't lords be up against that revolutionary wall?)
