Player of the Season

Post by BWFC_Insane » Mon Apr 29, 2013 9:06 am

Ok, I'm not starting a poll as Bruce will probably get annoyed.

And it's not quite the end of the season yet. But the BN have a poll up with their nominations.

Alonso
Dawson
Pratley
Eagles
Spearing

So who would your pick be and why?

Spearing is the only one to have been consistently decent. The rest have been shit for parts of the season (to varying degrees).

Spearing has definitely been the most consistent. So I guess if that is the criteria (and it's a very reasonable basis) then he's definitely the choice.

For me although he's wildly inconsistent I'd probably say Eagles.

Sure he's up and down like a yo-yo. But he's top scorer, probably near the top of the assists chart and he was the one bright spark at the start of the season when most other players (Spearing included) were fairly gash.

For me Spearing is a miss currently cos he's the best at winning the ball back.

Were Eagles to be out for Blackpool and beyond I just couldn't see where the goals and/or inspiration would come from to win games, as for me he's the driving force in an attacking sense (especially without Mark Davies and NGog).

Eagles for the goals and assists, or Spearing for his duracell like durability. Errr... Eagles.

Probably Spearing or Eagles despite his mid season dip in form. Wouldn't mind if any of those nominees won it though really.

Dawson.

Only played, I think, 16 games, but everything .... literally everything, changed when he arrived. That he is a loanee from West Brom for whom he can't get a game is truly humbling to us as a club. However his organisation, leadership, craft, calmness and ability shone through.

How we will miss him.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Dificult one as Spearing has had the most consistency, but without Eagles' goals, we would be nowhere near the play off places.

The difficulty in summoning any enthusiasm for any one name here does remind you of why it is we have problems, doesn't it?

And the fact that Pratley is quite high up my list puts things into even sharper focus!

Pratley is technically pretty basic, but he makes up for it with his engine and all round energy and spirit. There is a place in a side for that sort of player if utilised properly.

I've said all along that had clueless been any good Pratley would have figured more last season and we'd not have been so light in midfield at times and not have missed Muamba/Holden as much as we did.

End of the day Pratley is currently keeping Holden out in effect, and yes a "not fully fit" Holden, but who would ever have thought that would happen at all, ever, a year or so ago?

Only a couple of months ago Pratley was considered a joke by most. The only 2 that really come out of the season with real credit are Eagles and Spearing. The rest have been meh at best.

Sums up our season really, either form is on/off or they're out injured for part of the season.

Out of the 5 on the OP there's a fairly strong possibility that 3/5 won't be playing for us next season.
The players you fail to sign never lose you any money.

Worthy had it right the other day i.e. When Spearing ticks we do. However, I'm persuaded by the argument that without Eagles we wouldn't have a hope of winning the play offs should we get there - so it's Chris for me. Just

Spearing's been great but it has to be Eagles. If you can't win it when you've scored the most goals and created the most goals then you're going to struggle to ever win it. He's infuriating, but if he was consistent he wouldn't be...you get it.

But by that logic only people that create and score goals can be player of the season. Most important player of the last 3 months has been Dawson. Discount his goals and his presence has probably prevented more goals than Eagles has scored or created. Over a season that would be more valuable to me than Eagles.

I know I'm on wonky ground here, but I think your ground is wonkier :D
