Re: Summer Holidays
Arrived today in selva di gardena in the Dolomites. Possibly the most beautiful place I've ever been to. Looking forward to a good fortnight of walking, cycling, running, eating and drinking. Still found time to catch Radio Tango too

Re: Summer Holidays
I have been to Eastbourne, Lewes, Braintree and London. Not quite so well travelled, but I'm not back in work until next Monday. Had a great time with lovely people along the way.
Re: Summer Holidays
Just got back from a trip out east to visit the girl who is working in Singapore for 6 months (back.in 2 weeks thank fcuk!) 10 days in Sing. and 6 in Ubud in Bali.
Had a fab time. She loves it in Singapore and I enjoyed it, though there's something unsettlingly Orwellian about the whole place from the chewing gum ban, to, I was told, a ban on walking around your own house in the buff without the curtains drawn. It's like a city of robots. They even freak out if you try to order off menu.
There was a pool at her block of apartments so spent the first week by that while she was at work (though the ubiquitous high rise buildings meant there was only a four hour window of sun). Did all the sights and had all the food for which S is incredible. You can get ANYTHING. Wouldn't recommend as a holiday destination itself, but defo worth a few days' stop over if you're ever flying through on your way elsewhere.
Then to Bali. From the sleek bustle of a crowded city to the jungle on a paradise island. Had a great time. Highlights probably: 1) being right next to the monkey forest park. Everywhere we walked around the hotel were macaque monkeys being cool as feck. 2) climbing a mountain in the middle of the night, in the pitch black, to watch the sun set. 2am start was worth it for the incredible view. The climb back down was terrifying though as you saw what you'd climbed up in the pitch black with nothing but a pound shop torch! 3) my panic in logging in to here in a quiet moment in town to be informed I'd been permanently banned! Apparently the IP address of a creperie in the Indonesian jungle was used by someone banned. Well, that's my story anyway!
Lowlight was probably the plethora of people ruining every view, every sight, every attraction taking hundreds of shit pictures with their phones that no-one will ever look at.

They were pretty cool monkeys, to be fair.
Did manage to put my hand in monkey shit though, which was unpleasant to say the least.

That's what I thought too.
What I really want to know is did he watch the sunrise (I think he meant) in his little pink dressing gown?

If you gotta spank the monkey...
Re: Summer Holidays
Doh yes sun-rise.
And I never mentioned it being little. Stop projecting.
Could have done with it to be fair. Was fecking freezing until the sun came up. Had some eggs boiled in a steam vent (the mountain was a volcano).

I expect it might have been Mount Batur. My son climbed it a couple of years back with a miner's helmet with light on. Here he is with some random girl.Prufrock wrote:Doh yes sun-rise.

I'd like to take credit, Hobes, but I was half a world away and don't climb mountains any more, especially active volcanoes.

I've been to pathos 3 times and enjoyed it. Stuff going on but not your typical youngster holiday.Hoboh wrote:Anyone been to Cyprus for a hol, just fancy it end of January for a fortnight, Limassol area.

Yes. Paphos is OK and some decent beaches at Ayia Napa. Famagusta might be worth a trip, just for the experience and you can do the Pyramids n stuff on an overnight boat trip (wouldn't do them now had armed escorts when it was "quiet"). Other than that it's like any Greek island with sand and I expect comparatively pricey given the FX rate.LeverEnd wrote:I've been to pathos 3 times and enjoyed it. Re: Summer Holidays
Got dragged over, kicking and screaming, to attend a conference in Ayia Napa some years ago which took place here: https://www.atlanticahotels.com/hotels/ ... rt-and-Spa" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which was absolutely superb. You're going out of season so presumably the town centre won't be 'rave capital central' at that point (If it still is at all?!).
May the bridges I burn light your way

Re: Summer Holidays
My lad went to AN a couple of ears ago on a lads holiday. He reckoned it was as dangerous place as he's been, with large groups of Serbian young men carrying knives roaming the streets looking for confrontation. Not a place for a family holiday!

Certainly "The Square" right in the centre can be a bit hairy. But as Bruce says out on the coast, some very good hotels and some superb beaches. I'd also add that "Conferences" in AN are really just jollies.

Re: Summer Holidays
S.I.L got married in Paphos in may and I was told in no uncertain terms that I had to get on a plane for the first time in ten years to attend it. I genuinely looked at the logistics of driving there but that was pretty much out of the question so I ended up flying there. Glad I did cos it were brilliant, dead good. Really nice people and a great place. Beautiful island that, if you can stomach the four and a half hours death ride each way that is.
Go for it.
